2.7% of Country's Population Are Blood Donors

Sari – Head of the Iran Blood Transfusion Organization, noting that national blood reserves rose to 12 days in Farvardin, said that currently 2.7% of the country's population are blood donors.

Sari - CEO of Iran's Blood Transfusion Organization, referring to the increase of the country's blood reserves to 12 days in April, said: Currently, 2.7 percent of the country's population are blood donors.

According to Mehr reporter, Ahmad Qarabaghiat in a conversation with reporters on Wednesday evening, emphasizing the necessity of synchronizing blood transfusion capacities with the needs of medical centers, said: The development of equipment and human resources of this organization has not progressed in accordance with the expansion of medical centers, especially specialized and ultra-specialized centers.

Referring to the change in the country's blood reserves, Qarabaghian stated: Before the Ramadan war, the amount of blood reserves was four days, which increased to 9 days by the end of March and to 12 days in April.

He identified the widespread acceptance of blood donation as the main reason for this increase and added: the amount of blood reserves in developed countries is between eight and 12 days, and registering a 12-day reserve in the country is a rare event in the history of blood transfusion in Iran.

The CEO of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization stated that blood supply is not limited to specific periods and stated: Currently, 2.7% of the country's population are blood donors, while patients and medical centers need blood and blood products every day, and the continuation of people's participation is necessary to meet this need.

Qarabaghian listed three groups of thalassemia patients, cancer patients and people undergoing general surgery as the most important recipients of blood and said: The delay in general surgeries has increased the need for blood.

Referring to the increase in the speed of the health system, he pointed out that: based on the surveys, the speed of the health system has doubled, but the blood transfusion organization has not been able to develop its capacities along with the increase in the needs of the society.

The necessity of changing the ways of recruiting donors

The CEO of Iran Blood Transfusion Organization considered the attraction of new donors as one of the important axes of this organization's activity and stated: It should be planned for more women and youth to participate in the blood donation cycle. There is a culture of donating blood in the society, but the ways of attracting and persuading donors should be reviewed.

Referring to the increase in the average age of donors due to the aging of the country's population, Qarabaghian added: using the capacity of tourists to donate blood in different regions of the country, especially in the northern provinces, can be considered.

He also cited the supply of equipment and consumables needed by blood transfusion centers as another issue in this area and said: the supply of blood bags is facing challenges and the reception of donors is not favorable either; Therefore, the support of governorates for blood transfusion centers is important.
