The head of the country's internal affairs commission announced the decentralized holding of council elections in three groups at the meeting of the assembly of mayors of Iran's metropolises and said: the transfer of non-sovereign tenures to municipalities is also being finalized with the amendment of Article 126 of the municipal law.

According to ambassador Arjan; Mohammad Saleh Jokar, the head of the country's internal affairs and councils commission, at the 128th meeting of the assembly of mayors of major cities of Iran, which is being held in Yazd, said: "The suspension of the elections was due to the special security conditions of the country, and the text proposed in this regard was approved and approved by the Supreme Leader in this regard.

Jokar added: Although Article 283 of the law had announced the start of new councils, the conditions of the country were such that we had no choice but to stop the elections. Although the war is over, the threats continue.

Parliament's opposition to the dissolution of councils

The head of the country's internal affairs commission stated that some wanted to dissolve the councils and hand over the deputy position to the ministry of interior, and clarified: This matter was followed up in the parliament and due to the opposition of the majority of the representatives, the councils were decided to continue their work.

Jokar added: The Ministry of Interior and the Central Supervisory Board believed that some cities are not ready to hold elections due to differences or security conditions, but we officially announced that if a city does not have the conditions to hold elections, the reasons should be announced to the parliament.

He further announced the preparation of the draft text for holding decentralized and non-centralized elections and said: In the amendment of the law, it is foreseen that there is no need to hold general council elections, because the councils are people's institutions and responsible for local governance, and the holding can be left to the provinces.

Division of provinces into three groups for holding council elections

Jokar, referring to the opposition of the Expediency Council to the holding of indirect elections in the past, stated: Finally, it was decided that the permission to hold elections would be issued from November, and the provinces were divided into three groups; War zone provinces were in the first group, cold regions were in the second group and other provinces were in the third group based on population and geographical location.
