The challenges of translating novels from English to Persian were investigated in Lorestan University
Khorramabad- The scientific-promotional conference "Examining the challenges and opportunities of translating novels from English to Farsi" was held in Lorestan University with the presence of students and a group of experts.
According to Ambassador Arjan's report, a scientific-promotional lecture on the topic of "Challenges and opportunities of translating novels from English to Farsi" was presented by Nozer Niazi, a member of the academic faculty of the English Language Department of Lorestan University, and was held with the participation of students.
In this meeting, the process of literary translation, especially novel translation, was discussed and the presenter explained the most important challenges and opportunities faced by translators in transferring literary works from English to Farsi.
The topics of this course were presented in two main axes: the challenges of novel translation and the opportunities resulting from literary translation for the Persian language and intercultural communication.
Cultural and linguistic challenges in novel translation
In describing the challenges of translating the novel, Niazi pointed out the cultural and contextual differences between the source and destination languages; Differences that make it difficult for the translator to convey the cultural concepts, slang and humor hidden in the original text.
In this section, the difficulty of fully conveying the cultural and semantic space of the work was considered; Because in some cases, the inability to accurately reproduce cultural elements can lead to the loss of part of the spirit and characteristics of the original text in the translation.
Preservation of the author's style and tone was one of the other topics raised in this lecture. Loyalty to the author's writing style, narrative tone, and sentence rhythm are among the important responsibilities of a novel translator, and neglecting these features can affect the experience of reading the translated work.
Also, the ambiguity of words in the source language was raised as another difficulty of literary translation. Choosing the appropriate equivalent for words that have different meanings according to the context of the text requires the translator's linguistic mastery and his accurate understanding of the text.
literary translation; An opportunity to enrich the Persian language
In another part of this meeting, the possibilities of translating the novel from English to Persian were examined. One of the most important capacities of translating literary works is helping to enrich the target language in terms of vocabulary and syntactic structures.
The translation of valuable literary works can provide the basis for familiarizing the Persian language with new ways of expression and linguistic structures, and at the same time, it can expand the capacities in the target language to recreate literary concepts and experiences.
Translation as a bridge between cultures was one of the other axes of this section. The translation of English-language novels makes it possible for Persian-speaking audiences to become familiar with the literature, history, and thoughts of English-speaking societies and gain a broader understanding of cultural and human experiences in other societies.
The translator's creativity in recreating the literary text
In this course, the role of the translator's creativity in facing the difficulties of equivalence was also considered. In cases where it is not possible to directly transfer a word, term or concept from the source language to the target language, the translator can provide solutions that fit the context and atmosphere of the work by relying on his linguistic knowledge and creative ability.
This approach shows that literary translation is not just replacing the words of one language with the words of another language, but a process that requires understanding the meaning, paying attention to the author's style, and recreating the literary experience for the target language audience.
The role of artificial intelligence and translation criticism criteria
In the question-and-answer section of this scientific-promotional chair, the participants raised their views and questions about the quality of translations available in the book market, the role of artificial intelligence in literary translation, and translation criticism and evaluation criteria.
Niazi also answered the questions raised and emphasized the necessity of combining academic and workshop training in the field of literary translation.
Paying attention to the theoretical foundations of translation, along with practical practice and examining real examples, was one of the emphasized axes of this meeting; An approach that can provide the basis for strengthening the linguistic, analytical and creative skills of students and literary translators.
The presence of academic experts in the meeting
In this scientific-extension chair, Pouyan Rezapour, a member of the academic faculty of the English Language Department of Lorestan University, Mohammad Khosravi Shakib, a member of the academic faculty of the Persian Language and Literature Department of Lorestan University, and Gholamhossein Hosseini, a member of the academic faculty of the English Language Department of Lorestan University, were present as experts of the meeting.
