President Trump describes his friendship with the pope's brother as he releases a heartfelt message for Pope Leo amid his reported battle with cancer.
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday wished Pope Leo XIV a speedy recovery after he was diagnosed with lung cancer and revealed he is friends with the pope's brother, who he described as an avid supporter of MAGA.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One from Arizona to Montana, Trump expressed optimism about the 71-year-old pope's recovery after surgery to remove part of his right lung.
"I want to see Pope Leo get well. I hear the prognosis for this kind of problem. It's a cancer. It's a big thing. Anytime you have cancer," the president said. "But the prognosis seems to be good, I've been watching. And we just want to wish him our love and best wishes."

Trump then spoke about his friendship with the Pope's brother and his wife, describing them as passionate supporters of the president.
He continued, "His brother is a friend of mine who's a great guy — he's a great guy — and his wife. You know, they're big Trump supporters. They have MAGA all over their house." And I can tell that his brother loves him very much. He loves the Pope very much and that's good, but I just want to wish him well.
The president's comments came a day after the Vatican announced that Leo had been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, following surgery at Rome's Augustino Gemelli University Hospital.
Doctors removed the lower lobe of the pope's right lung during an operation that lasted approximately 90 minutes, according to the Holy See's press office. Doctors did not report any complications.

The Vatican said the cancer diagnosis was confirmed by examination of tissue collected during surgery, which is consistent with the findings of preoperative tests.
Leo previously revealed that doctors discovered a small lump in his lung in the early stages and recommended surgery. After the operation, he woke up normally and returned to his hospital room after a short period of care, according to the Vatican.
