Chery Registrations Suspended, Recall Reissued / Axle-Breaking Nightmare Complete
Another suspension defect in the Chery Omoda 5 (sold in Iran as the Phoenix FX) has once again put the Chinese manufacturer in the spotlight.
Repeating the nightmare of a technical defect in the suspension system of Chery Amuda 5 (which is sold in the Iranian market under the name of Phoenix FX) once again pushed the Chinese manufacturer to the sidelines.
Amirmasoud Abedin: The sudden breaking and separation of the rear axle in the Chery Amuda 5 crossover (known as C5 or O5 in some markets and Phoenix FX in Iran) once again caused controversy. This is the second time that this Chinese SUV is struggling with a similar technical defect in Malaysia; An incident that has brought the rapid reaction of Malaysian regulatory bodies and a widespread recall of nearly 9,000 units of this car.
The story started when an Amuda 5 machine suddenly broke and completely detached the rear axle while driving in the city of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The occurrence of a similar incident in 2024, which led to the recall of 600 devices, raised sensitivities to this issue. Following this incident, the Malaysian Road Transport Authority suspended the Type Approval (VTA) of this model to stop the numbering of new versions until the completion of technical reviews.
Chery's admission of defects in welding and the initiation of the recall
After a few days of silence, the Chery dealership officially explained the details of this incident that happened to a 2023 production model. Joint investigations by Chery and the Malaysian Road Transport Authority showed that the welding points in the rear suspension arms were not strong enough and this part was at risk of breaking under high pressure conditions.
Chery announced that the affected vehicles include 8,878 C and H models, and the defective parts will be inspected and replaced free of charge. This car manufacturer also emphasized that the production line of versions with this type of design will be stopped in 2025 and the review of similar cars for export to other international markets has also started.
Technical specifications and market conditions
Chery Amuda 5 was sold in the Malaysian market at a price between 108,400 and 118,400 ringgit (equivalent to 26,500 and 29,000 dollars). This compact crossover with a length of 4400 mm is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine with a power of 154 hp and a torque of 230 Nm, which transmits power to the front wheels through a CVT gearbox.
The noteworthy point here is that Chery Malaysia offered an unprecedented 10-year or 1 million kilometer warranty to gain the trust of buyers; However, the repetition of heavy technical defects in the suspension system has created a big challenge for the brand's reputation and build quality in global markets.
