Newly appointed White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharias speaks during her first press briefing in the James Brady Briefing Room at the White House on Oct. 13, 2026.

President Donald Trump has asked his ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, to tender her resignation amid a barrage of negative press, the new White House press secretary announced in her first meeting with reporters on Tuesday.

The announcement by newly appointed White House press secretary Cathy Zacharias meant Guilfoyle's firing came just a day after Trump publicly said he was considering firing him following allegations he asked a political donor to pay a $100,000 personal American Express bill. Guilfoyle, who was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr. and a major player in the MAGA movement, has also gained a reputation for partying hard in Athens and living high as Trump's personal representative in the region.

"We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. He has been a tremendous asset to the team and we wish him well," Zakaria said in his unusually short first speech to the briefing room.

Guilfoyle is a former prosecutor and television personality. He and Trump Jr. broke off their engagement last year, months before the Senate confirmed him as the top U.S. envoy to Greece. She was previously married to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is widely considered a Democratic contender for the 2028 presidential nomination.
