Saudi Arabia extends airport closure after Houthi attacks

Saudi Arabia's aviation regulator has extended the closure of the country's main airport after two deadly attacks over the weekend, as Yemen's Houthi rebels continue to fire missiles into the country.

The Kingdom's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced on Monday that the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has been extended. Several airlines including Fly Dubai, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Air India have canceled their flights to Riyadh.

The Houthi attacks on the airport on Saturday left 12 dead, including four Saudi citizens, and more than 300 wounded. Another attack the next day killed a Pakistani national and wounded 11 others.

The Houthis, an Iranian-backed Shiite group, described the strikes as a "deterrence operation" and accused Saudi Arabia of maintaining an illegal "siege" on parts of Yemen under its control.

Major General Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said earlier Tuesday that coalition forces intercepted two Houthi ballistic missiles that were fired at Khamis Mushait, a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

According to reports, videos published on social networks show the Saudi air defense launching interceptors into the sky.

Previous footage shows Saudi PAC-3 interceptors being launched over Riyadh to counter Ansarullah (Houthis) ballistic missiles.
