⚔️ If you defeat General Luthor, you will receive the General's Catalyst Clot, 10k Catalyst and the Torn-Banner achievement.
⚔️ You only have one chance to defeat him, because if you die, a cutscene will play and the boss will disappear.
⚔️ If you hit ALT + F4 the moment you die, I noticed you can load right before the arena boss and try again.
General Luthor, The Eagle-Bearer, is the first boss in Valor Mortis, and it's one of those classic Ghost-like fights that you're not really going to win.
Your chances are very high, especially since you only have one try. Dying triggers a cutscene where Lucjan appears to save you and provide some information about the world, but the boss disappears.
While I spent a lot of time beating Lothaire trying to figure out what was going on, I found that you can ALT + F4 when you die, and generally when you load it puts you out of the boss square and lets you fight again. If you defeat General Luthor, you will receive:
10k Catalyst (effectively soul in this game)
General Catalyst Clot (which gives 10k more)
This is a huge plus in terms of initial leveling. Valor Mortis also doesn't have a boss weapon, so you can spend that clot without losing.
You will also receive the Torn-Banner achievement. Since I beat him, I can't confirm if Luthor will show up later, so this might be the only way you can get this. However, is it worth repeatedly ALT + F4ing to fight him until you win?

not really Valor Mortis isn't a hard game by Soul standards, so the initial level up doesn't matter much. However, if you are set on it, I recommend it
Parry in your first phase to get critical attacks.
Avoid his more predictable combos in the second phase, dealing as much damage as you can.
You can see me doing these things in the video above - although you can probably be more aggressive than me in the second step when you feel her movements.
