Apple is taking the smart home space seriously. The company on Tuesday unveiled its new Apple Home collection, which includes a new smart lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor and a range of security cameras.

The new devices are designed to work with HomeView, the company's new smart home hub that can be used to control connected accessories and interact with Apple software.

This new range of smart home accessories could help Apple better compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest, two established players in connected home security. These products will be available in December.

Apple says the devices are built in partnership with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric — an interesting move for the company, which has long sought to build and support any smart home accessory.

Priced at $349.95, the smart lock stands out for its support for ultra-wideband (UWB), a wireless technology that enables more accurate proximity detection than traditional Bluetooth. This can allow the lock to automatically unlock the door when an authorized user approaches, reducing the need to pull out a phone or reach for a physical key.

Meanwhile, a $249.95 wired video doorbell lets homeowners see who's out. It monitors visitors and receives notifications when someone approaches their property. When someone rings it, it plays through Apple devices like HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini. Users will also be notified on their iPhone or iPad.

As for the temperature sensor, it can provide insight into individual room conditions, helping users detect temperature differences between zones and make adjustments.

For security, Apple is also introducing indoor and outdoor cameras, as well as the Spotlight Camera ($399.95), which combines outdoor lighting with video surveillance. The camera suite includes features such as live view, motion detection, smart alerts and video storage.
