Michael Che Dismissed Shane Gillis' Controversial 'SNL' Monologue

"Weekend Update" host Michael Che responded to the backlash after comedian Shane Gillis' "Saturday Night Live" monologue on the "Today" show.

"Weekend Update" host Michael Che didn't think much of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" host Shane Gillis' controversial monologue when asked on Thursday's "Today" show about the backlash against the comedian.

Gillis sparked controversy Saturday while hosting "SNL" for the third time. During his opening monologue, the comedian joked about going clubbing in New York City before turning his attention to revealing women's sportswear.

I haven't been to the gym in a long time. I didn't know that ladies now dress like frumpy-----? Gillis said. "Look, I'm sorry, there's no other way to describe [it]. You've seen it? I've seen it. You've seen the panties? They're neon, like fake bait [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and they all come together in the hole. And don't let me look!

'SNL' actor Dan Levy blasts Shane Gillis' monologue, claims men's 'pleasure' leads to rape.

"Should've done more press this week for the promo special," wrote "Today" host Laura Jarrett of Che, who was promoting her new Netflix comedy special, "Michael Che: Minnesota Shooting," about her recent Instagram post in which she appeared to mock the backlash against Gillis.

Che laughed on the show airing her censored post, but she didn't think about the backlash Gillis received for her comments.

"It's a comedy. "It's like you think it's funny, and then some people don't."

He admitted that he didn't initially see Gillis' monologue when the show aired because he was working on cue cards for the show. When he saw Gillis' monologue, he said he "honestly didn't think about it."

"There's a lot going on. It's really hard to see what everyone's doing, especially for me. It's like I'm not as 'good at it' as they say, so I don't pay attention to it.

He added that his own experience of delivering controversial jokes with co-host Colin Jost has kept him from criticizing other comics.

"That's why I can't criticize anyone for swinging and missing, because I've definitely swung and missed," Che says. "I'm trying to get this heat away from me."

Comedian Tim Young called the backlash against Gillis proof that Wook isn't "dead" and agreed with Che's take on the situation.

"It's absolutely right here," he added. Jokes are not for everyone. Some audiences like them and others don't, but people can choose to tune in to what they like and don't like. Also, some jokes get noticed and some don't. Gillis seems to get more jokes than most, as he now holds the record for the world's biggest comedy show. Both he and Che are funny comedians and they're at their level for a reason, and neither one gets canceled because a certain group of people don't like what they're saying."
