Apple has finally unveiled its long-rumored foldable phone: the iPhone Duo.
The new phone has a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen, a "nano-texture" finish on the inner screen, and hardly creases. Instead of Face ID, it uses Touch ID on the power button. It has two cameras, one main lens and one wide angle lens. Apple completely overhauled iOS 27's controls and apps for folding, including placing the dock on the side of the phone. And when you open the phone, it has a flashy opening animation.
The iPhone Duo is a big new bet from Apple, though it's a bit late to the game compared to rivals like Samsung and Google. The phone isn't cheap: it starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB model, and prices only go up from there. However, Apple said pre-order demand is "tremendous", so it could have a big impact.
Here is all about the iPhone Duo.

The first foldable iPhone is finally here, and after its unveiling, we got the chance to try it out for ourselves. We've been told for a long time that Apple will make a foldable iPhone when the technology is good enough – has it been worth the wait?
It definitely feels different. The inner screen has a completely matte coating that even partially controls the glare from the windows above the handheld area quite well. The folding mechanism is smooth and even IP68 rated, making it almost impossible to find wrinkles with your finger. The 5.4-inch exterior screen looks small by modern slab phone standards.
Apple says demand for iPhone Duo pre-orders has been "tremendous".
Delivery estimates are currently pushed back to 2027. Bloomberg reports that Apple said:
"The demand for pre-orders for the iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary," the company said in a statement. We are working hard to get this revolutionary new product to our customers as quickly as possible and continue to accept orders online."
Without disclosing whether inventory will be available for customers able to secure pre-orders when the device launches on October 23 (Oct. 23), he added: "Our teams look forward to welcoming customers to Apple Stores around the world to experience the iPhone Duo and the full line of incredible iPhones for themselves.
Orders for the iPhone Duo have been delayed until 2027
Estimates for delivery of the iPhone Duo dropped to next year less than an hour after Apple began taking pre-orders for it at 8 a.m. ET on Friday.
At the time of this writing, we're seeing late January delivery dates for each configuration on Apple's website. The foldable is set to hit stores on October 23, and Apple typically reserves some units for in-store availability. So while online orders may be delayed, you may be able to get one early in an Apple Store.

Few phones have been more anticipated than a foldable iPhone, but it's finally here. The iPhone 2 was unveiled during Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 models.
Apple's first foldable phone has a 5.4-inch outer display and opens to reveal its 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. Apple Pencil support is coming later this year. While it lacks Face ID for face unlock, there is a Touch ID sensor on the edge to recognize your fingerprint. The device is IP68 rated, with a ceramic shield 2 on the back, with a ceramic screen cover on the front. This A20 Pro chipset is the same as the iPhone 18 Pro. Notably, the Duo has the same 48MP Fusion camera as the 18 Pro, though it doesn't have a variable aperture.
Get your shopping cart ready before iPhone Duo pre-orders open tomorrow
Apple's foldable iPhone Duo opens for pre-order tomorrow, October 16th at 8am ET / 5am local time, but you don't have to wait until then to get your order in order. The company's product page for the phone now lets you choose the color you want, along with storage capacity, carrier preference, and whether you want to set up a deal to make the $1,999 foldable a little cheaper.
Once you've entered all the details, all you have to do tomorrow morning is confirm your order once pre-orders open. It will be ready for checkout in your shopping cart. This will save you time and put you ahead of people who are still customizing the details of their iPhone Duo.
iPhone Duo folding screen repair costs the same as a new iPhone
If you don't get AppleCare Plus for iPhone Duo, any repairs will be very expensive. According to MacRumors, Apple released the estimated repair costs for the iPhone Duo without AppleCare Plus today, and it could be high: for example, battery service will cost $229, internal screen damage will cost $999, and "other damage" will cost $1,499.
If you don't have AppleCare Plus, here are Apple's estimated costs for various repairs:
TCL's paper OLED phone made me even more excited for the iPhone Duo

I've spent most of the last few weeks using an unremarkable Android phone with one surprising feature: a matte OLED display. The screen is by far the best thing about the TCL P80 Ultra, and oddly enough, it makes me even more excited for the iPhone Duo and its internal matte display.
The TCL Nxtpaper 40 in 2023 brought matte displays to the company's phones for the first time since they first appeared on tablets in 2021. Nxtpaper is more than just a simple matte finish on a panel. It also includes a paper-like mode and energy-efficient monochrome modes that produce decent faxes from a single E-ink page. But the matte effect has always been the biggest attraction for me.
You only get one chance at a first impression, and introducing Apple's first foldable phone is certainly a strong way to start your career as Apple CEO. Today on The Vergecast, we're talking all things Apple's launch event: how John Ternos did in his first role as CEO, what we'll make of the new iPhones, and whether Apple is entering dangerous territory with its new AI features on the Apple Watch.
First up, Alison Johnson joins me to talk about the new iPhones, which she had a chance to test in Cupertino. We both have questions about the new variable-aperture camera on the iPhone 18 Pro — and whether the real upgrade is simply in the wider aperture, not the ability to stop it down. Next, we'll take a look at the iPhone Duo and how Apple decided to pick and choose the best foldable Android parts.
Apple was one of the first companies to introduce a folding passport-shaped phone this year, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been copied. As my colleague Dom Preston previously explained , it's nearly impossible to keep product development secret when Apple and its competitors all share global suppliers.
Apple's new CEO John Ternos and Chief Marketing Officer Greg Joswiak addressed the issue during an interview with TechRadar's Lance Ulanoff and Tom's Guide's Mark Spooner.
The iPhone Duo's hardware doesn't seem special, but its software might be
With the iPhone Duo, Apple has ditched a familiar solution, entering the mature Android foldable market with a number of hardware features we've mostly seen elsewhere, but paired with a level of software that makes many of them feel new again. It's the software that makes me excited for the iPhone Duo next month, but I'm less convinced that the hardware will be anything special.
If Apple had gotten there first, the Duo's biggest surprise would have been its squat, wide, Passport-inspired form factor. But its slow supply chain meant that Huawei, Samsung and Xiaomi all managed to beat Apple to market with rivals of similar size, so the unusual design already looks relatively familiar - helped by Samsung's aggressive marketing efforts.
