2 narratives of the historical ways of Iran; Hamedan international caravanserais and the lasting value of a heritage

Hamidreza Heidari, the deputy director of cultural heritage of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts of Hamadan province, wrote in a note: Iran's historical roads were not only routes for moving goods and passengers; They formed networks of economic, cultural and social connections that connected cities, villages and distant lands. Along these roads, caravanserais were formed as stations for rest, provision of water and food, maintenance of cattle, and refreshment of travelers; Buildings that, in addition to their service function, provided a meeting place for people with different languages, beliefs and ways of life.

In Hamedan province, two historical monuments of Farsafaj and Tajabad represent a part of this extensive heritage. Despite the difference in the historical period, architectural design and physical characteristics, these two caravanserais were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023, equal to 1402 solar years, as components of the "Iranian Caravanserais" chain. Their importance is not only in the antiquity or beauty of architecture, but also in the role they play in representing the diversity of Iran's caravanserai patterns and the connection of architecture with geography and the network of historical roads.

Caravanserai; Architecture in the service of travel and cultural exchange

The history of the formation of way stations in Iran should be searched in the history of communication ways and travel organization. The documents of the Iranian caravanserai world file follow the evolution of this architectural tradition from the Achaemenid period, from the sixth century BC to the Qajar period and the last years of the nineteenth century. In this historical route, the need to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers, develop trade and establish communication between different regions, has been effective in the formation and expansion of inter-road buildings.

In different eras, caravanserais found various architectural models according to geographical and climatic conditions, available materials and the needs of the route. Some were built in dry and scarce areas, with an emphasis on protecting travelers against harsh environmental conditions, and others were placed on mountain paths, plains, or the outskirts of cities and villages. The choice of the location of these buildings depended on factors such as access to water, the condition of the land, the safety of the route, and the distance between travel stations.

However, the function of the caravanserai was not limited to providing shelter. Merchants, pilgrims, craftsmen and other travelers communicated with each other in these spaces and goods, news, technical knowledge and cultural experiences circulated among them. From this point of view, the caravanserai can be considered a part of the historical infrastructure of communication; An infrastructure whose architecture served the formation of human and economic relations.

Why were Iranian caravanserais included in the world heritage list?

In its 45th meeting, in 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee registered the "Iranian Caravanserai" complex in the World Heritage List based on criteria (ii) and (iii). This collection includes 54 caravanserais that have been selected from among the many historical caravanserais of Iran. The purpose of this registration is not to introduce a single building or a specific architectural style, but to show the diversity and evolution of caravanserai tradition in the geographical area of Iran and in a long period of time.

Criterion (ii) refers to the exchange of human values in the fields of architecture, technology, art and urban or landscape planning. In the case of the Iranian caravanserai, this criterion is related to the role of the caravanserai in providing a context for interaction between people and different cultures and with the variety of architectural patterns along the historical roads.

Criterion (iii) is also related to the unique or at least exceptional evidence of a cultural or civilizational tradition. In this case, caravanserais have become important as evidence of the continuity of the Iranian tradition of building and operating way stations over the centuries; A tradition that has played a role in the expansion of trade and economic and cultural interactions between different regions.

Therefore, the global registration of this complex is based on a set of related values: historical continuity, architectural diversity, connection with the road network, compatibility with the environment and social and cultural role. The two caravanserais of Hamedan can also be understood in the same framework; Their value, along with the specific features of each building, comes from their place in a wide collection of selected Iranian examples.

Farsafj Caravanserai; A manifestation of Safavid era caravanserai architecture

Farsafj Caravanserai is located near the city of Farsafj and within the boundaries of Tuysarkan city. This building is one of the works of the Safavid era and is one of the historical caravanserais of western Iran. Its location in the communication area of Hamedan and Tuiserkan highlights the importance of investigating the role of this region in historical traffic and the connection between settlements and regional routes.

Farsafaj, with its four-balcony design and approximate dimensions of 61 x 51 meters, is an example of the well-known patterns of Iranian caravanserai architecture. The spatial organization of the building, with the central courtyard and the surrounding spaces, provided the possibility of organizing transportation, accommodation for travelers and settlement of cattle. In addition to responding to the practical needs of the trip, this model created a specific order for the connection between the central space and the service departments.

The value of Farsafaj should be examined in the connection between its architectural features and its historical context. The location of the building in a regional communication route made it a part of the historical infrastructure of travel; An infrastructure that supported economic activities and social movements. Therefore, the study of this caravanserai is not only limited to recording its dimensions, map and architectural components, but it is also important to know the historical routes, its connection with the surrounding settlements and to examine the evidence related to the way the spaces are used.

Tajabad Caravanserai; Difference in design, continuity in function

At a distance from Hamadan and in the area of Rasool Abad village, there is a caravanserai, which differs from many known Iranian caravanserai in terms of architectural design. The Tajabad caravanserai, belonging to the Qajar period, is known with a circular map; A feature that has made it a distinctive example among the historical caravanserais of Iran.

The circular design of the building provides the possibility of studying the relationship between geometry, spatial organization and functional needs. In this complex, the central courtyard and surrounding spaces are organized in a different order from the common square pattern. This difference makes Tajabad an important example to explore the variety of architectural solutions in response to similar needs: providing accommodation, organizing the daily activities of travelers and providing a space to stop on the journey.

Tajabad is important because it shows that Iran's caravanserai tradition was not limited to a fixed geometric format. Architects and builders in different periods, while maintaining the main function of these buildings, have used different patterns for organizing the space. From the perspective of architectural research, this difference should be examined along with historical, geographical and functional factors; Not that it should be considered only as an external feature of the building.

Two caravanserais, two architectural models and a common value

The placement of Farsafaj and Tajabad in a global complex does not mean that their characteristics are the same. Farsafaj, with its quadrilateral plan and Safavid background, and Tajabad, with its circular plan and belonging to the Qajar period, show two different forms of caravanserai architecture. These differences, along with other Iranian examples, help to better understand the evolution of this architectural tradition over time.

In UNESCO's approach, the value of a collection of caravanserais is formed by the juxtaposition of examples with different characteristics. Each component alone shows a part of the history of architecture and communication ways; But their collection provides a broader picture of how Iranian society responds to the needs of travel, trade and communication between different regions.

From this point of view, the caravanserais of Hamedan are not the only historical works located within the limits of a province, but are considered a part of the national narrative about the historical road network of Iran. Their introduction should both explain the specific features of each building and clarify their connection with the common values of the global community.

global registration; Beginning of responsibility in protection and management

Inscription on the World Heritage List, in addition to increasing the recognition of a work, highlights the need for its continued protection and coordinated management. According to UNESCO documents, the protection of caravanserais should not be limited to the building itself; The surrounding environment, privacy, dependent elements and the connection of the work with its historical and geographical background are also important in maintaining the global value.

In this framework, regular monitoring of physical condition, documentation of changes, preventive maintenance, management of natural and human risks and control of interventions within the scope of its effect and privacy are among the important issues of managing this collection. Also, any new use of caravanserais should be planned in such a way that the originality of architecture, historical materials, spatial organization and cultural values are not damaged.

In the 2025 decision of the World Heritage Committee regarding the conservation status of the Iranian Caravanserai complex, it is emphasized on strengthening the monitoring system, coordination between the responsible institutions, preparedness against risks and drafting guidelines for the consistent use of the buildings. This shows that global registration is not the end of protection, but the beginning of a continuous phase of professional and managerial responsibility.
