Football Star Dies at 39
Doug Lufft, former captain of Port Vale and Gillingham, who also played for Brighton, died at the age of 39.
After leaving Brighton, Loftus joined Portville in 2009 and made 196 appearances for the team between 2009 and 2014. He then went to Gillingham and played 70 times for this team.
The Gillingham club said in a statement that Loftus died after suffering a medical emergency over the weekend. "He will be remembered not only for his achievements on the pitch, but also for his commitment and leadership throughout his time here," a Portville club statement said.
"At this very sad time, all of Portville Club extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Doug's family, friends, former team-mates and all who knew him.
"With the agreement of Doug's family, we have requested the English Football League organization that our players enter the field with black armbands in this week's match against Chesterfield and a minute's silence will be held in his honor before the start of the match."
Lofth began his career in the grassroots ranks at non-league club Hastings United before joining Brighton in January 2006, shortly after his 20th birthday. He made three appearances for Brighton in the Championship and scored one goal. Loft also played another 46 games in English League One with this team's shirt.
