US Ambassador to Greece Resigns

The US ambassador to Greece resigned under government pressure after allegations of financial corruption came to light.

According to the report of Ambassador Arjan, quoted by Tagus Show newspaper, Kimberly Guilfoyle, the American ambassador in Athens, has resigned due to allegations of inappropriate behavior and financial corruption. The US government had previously asked him to step down over alleged wrongdoing, including demanding payment of $100,000 in credit card debt.

The Wall Street Journal recently published text messages purporting to prove Guilfoyle asked a supporter of President Donald Trump to pay his $100,000 credit card bill. In exchange, he apparently promised him access to government agencies. The Greek ambassador also allegedly threatened the representative of his host country and accepted inappropriate gifts.

Kimberly Guilfoyle announced her resignation in a lengthy post on social media platform X. He stated that he will vigorously defend himself against the allegations of misconduct. These accusations relate to the period before and during his stay in Athens.

In recent weeks, several reports have been published in the American newspaper Wall Street Journal, which claim that Guilfoyle has engaged in suspicious and inappropriate behavior. For example, he is said to have said in Athens in March that the United States might be involved in the impending change of government in Romania and could do the same in Greece, according to the reports.

The Wall Street Journal also published reports purporting to prove Guilfoyle solicited a $100,000 wire transfer from Trump financier Eric Deters. Guilfoyle, 57, needed the money to pay off his debts to American Express. Deters was supposed to send the money in such a way that it could not be traced afterwards.

On Monday, President Donald Trump expressed displeasure with reports about Guilfoyle's behavior. Asked by reporters at the White House if he was considering firing the ambassador, he said: "Well, we're looking into it." We are not satisfied."

Guilfoyle lawyers deny any wrongdoing by their client.

The 57-year-old woman was once the wife of Gavin Newsom, the current Democratic governor of California. She worked as a presenter on the American Ambassador Arjan TV channel and was also briefly engaged to the son of the US president, Donald Trump Jr.

Guilfoyle later became a prominent supporter of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement. About a year ago, he became ambassador to Greece, where he pushed hard for American oil and gas companies to invest in the region.
