When Nvidia first showed off DLSS 5 earlier this year, the technology was immediately recognized as the next generation of AI for video games. For gamers, Nvidia had lost the story. Personally, I couldn't figure out how the faces were morphed using DLSS 5. The 15-year-old student from Hogwarts Legacy suddenly looks much older, and Grace from Resident Evil Requiem looks embarrassed.
Now over six months later, DLSS 5 is about to launch right into the Hogwarts legacy, and it looks like it's seriously dropped. Nvidia released new comparison screenshots today, where the face changes are as subtle as NBA 2K27. Teenagers are no longer like middle-aged men, and even environmental changes seem more subtle.

Nvidia has always maintained that developers have "exact artistic control" over DLSS 5 and ultimately choose how to implement the technology in their games. DLSS 5 is now appearing in Hogwarts Legacy on November 5th, and is also coming to Where Winds Meet later next month.
Nvidia is also improving DLSS 5 performance with an October update to the neural rendering system that could double its speed on RTX 50-series GPUs and upcoming RTX Spark laptops. "The October 5 DLSS update reduces the footprint by 24 percent to approximately 118 million parameters, while reducing 4K VRAM usage by 20 percent," says Nvidia's Andrew Burns. This new DLSS 5 model will debut in NBA 2K27 on October 16th, and will "come by default with future DLSS 5 games."
Along with the DLSS 5 updates, Nvidia has also pushed out a new Nvidia beta program update that includes a faster performance mode for frame generation on RTX 40 and 50 series GPUs. The updated AI model uses a "faster and lighter frame rate scaling algorithm" for generation frames, multi-frame generation, and general dynamic multi-frames. Nvidia says it has "minor image quality trade-offs" and the performance mode for frame generation should now be up to 35 percent faster.
