While Crystal Lake reunites some familiar locals from the Friday the 13th franchise, Gwendoline Sundstrom brings a fresh spin to the slasher prequel series.
Available now on Peacock, Sundström told Deadline that Jason Voorhees' (Callum Vinson) childhood friend Grace was her "favorite character so far" to play, and that she filmed Caleb Kane's Bird in New Jersey when she was just 13.
"It was fun because in real life I don't really relate to Grace that much, but it was fun trying to find things from my own life that I could put in Grace and really play her," Sundstrom explained. "But I had a great day every day on set, it was amazing." Watch on Deadline
As the series recounts the accidental drowning of young Jason, first mentioned in the original 1980 film, the opening scene of the first episode shows Grace throwing the bully's ball into the lake after taunting Jason. While counselors Claudette (Daniel Koch) and Barry (Phoenix Parnwick) sneak off to hook up, Jason goes after the ball, but ends up drowning deep in Crystal Lake.
Jason and Grace's lovable teenage friendship continues through flashbacks as he tries to grieve her death amid the normal complications of growing up.
"I think Callum and I have really good chemistry in real life as well, which was really helpful, but I think building Grace as a character also kind of helped," explained Sundström.
Pam Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), who has nowhere to put her motherly love after losing her son Jason, soon falls for Grace, whose mother appears to be abusive and neglectful.
I loved working with Linda. "He was very good," Sundstrom said. I definitely learned a lot from him. I think when Pam takes on this motherly role, I think it's something that Grace, first of all, isn't really used to and also doesn't really want. I think he's trying to push Pam away, and Pam just wants to be closer and even more protective, and I think that's kind of the conflict that these two characters have."
After finding a new "family" in a group of traveling hippies, Grace goes on a drug spree that leads to the destruction of the first murder in the Friday the 13th franchise. But instead of Pam, it turns out that Grace was the one who killed Claudette and Barry in that first person POV sequence.
"I had a lot of fun with that scene," Sundstrom said. "I definitely like shooting more dramatic, gritty, emotional stuff, so that was really fun for me."
And while die-hard fans of the franchise might not mind retelling such an iconic kill scene, Kane explained that he wanted to "blow people's minds" and "give the audience something different to chew on."
"We come to these movies for the rollercoaster. If you think you know everything from the movie going into the TV series, and we're just like, 'Yeah, it's exactly what you thought,' it's not fun," Tu Bydkin explained.
Airing on the Peacock, Crystal Lake stars Cardellini as Pam Voorhees, who struggles to grieve after her son Jason drowned the previous summer. When two strangers begin to delve into her mysterious past, Pam struggles to keep her secrets under wraps and finds her son, who she's convinced is still alive after his body was never found.
