Spike Lee, LeBron James and Mick Jagger have all been seen wearing Morgenthal Frederics eyewear, helping to make the New York label popular among celebrities. Now, the luxury eyewear house has been refreshed courtesy of John Juniper and Jeff Solorio, the design duo who founded DITA and helped turn high-end eyewear into a fashion category of its own.
Their debut Fall/Winter 2026 collection, launching on October 15, brings a new design direction to the brand best known for its handcrafted buffalo horn frames. The collection expands on Morgenthal Frederics' Japanese acetate and titanium offerings, with sculptural silhouettes, intricate metalwork and subtle new signatures, including purple temple tips. This appointment brings two familiar names in luxury eyewear to one of the oldest players in the category. Childhood friends who founded DITA in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, Juniper and Solorio built the label around Japanese craftsmanship and classic-inspired silhouettes. Their influence eventually spread to the designer eyewear business, notably through DITA's collaboration with Tom Brown, launched in 2011.
Meanwhile, Morgenthal's history dates back to 1913, when it started as Frederick Optics in Manhattan, before adopting its current name in 1986 as Richard Morgenthal Opticians. But the brand's celebrity following is what really helped it maintain its reputation. Lee, whose large, brightly colored glasses are almost as recognizable as his fellow Knicks fans, ordered custom orange frames from Morgenthal Frederics. Norman Reedus has also previously appeared in a campaign for the label.
Juniper and Solorio do not abandon the buffalo horn designs that distinguished Friedrich Morgenthal. Instead, they've paid similar attention to materials and construction to acetate and titanium, with Japanese craftsmen producing frames with hand-etched surfaces, custom metal accents and detailing on the lenses and nose pads.
"What draws us to Morgenthal Frederics is that it's nearly a hundred years old, but creatively it still looks like a clean slate," the designers said in a joint statement. "There's a great team around the brand, a lot of support, and no unnecessary hedging. It gives us the freedom to create something beautiful at the highest level – and that's what excites us."
The Fall/Winter 2026 collection will be available October 15th at Morgenthal Frederics boutiques and online, with prices ranging from $795 to $2,995.
