Ben Affleck lost 3 years to Starcraft, has bravely strong opinions, and mourns RTS as a genre, so there's a good chance he'll be one of our regular commenters.

He is also handsome and rich. I am starting to think that we are the same person.

Unlike PC Gamer's UK editorial, Ben Affleck knows the ball. I mean metaphorically. Although he probably knows what the Miami Heat are. On the Oct. 12 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Affleck spoke about being confused — with a bit of regret — when Starcraft swallowed up his entire life.

"There was a game called Starcraft that probably took over my life for a while. I had just become famous and all I did was stay at home and play Starcraft for three years."

Celebrities are just like us. More so than usual with Affleck, I suppose, since the actor's video game career doesn't just include a brief stint with Blizzard's RTS series. "Valorant is a great game. It's a great game," he continued. And I get angry. And they're like 11, they're like "damn you loser!" It's very humiliating, but it's a great game."

Which is pretty much my experience playing anything with anyone. But do you think Affleck — a full Batman and a half from Good Will Hunting — stopped there? "I love 2K, I love Madden," he recalls. The original Doom - which then spawned Quake and spawned all of them - we played it endlessly."

"We were playing Good Will Hunting, we were playing Doom... I remember writing and doing these long breaks for Doom. Doom, for our young readers, came out in 1993, the same year I was released.

Also on Affleck's long list of video games: Myst, Donkey Kong, Tetris, and Miss Pac-Man, though I don't know if those last three count as elite ballad knowledge.

After all, RTSs seem to have been Affleck's great love, and he laments that they're "kind of out of fashion." You and I, Ben. At least we got those Command and Conquer remasters.

One of Josh's earliest memories is playing Quake 2 on the family computer when he was too young to do so, and he has been irreparably addicted to the mind game ever since. His writing has appeared in Vice, Fanbyte, and the Financial Times. He'll play just about anything and has written too much about everything from visual novels to Assassin's Creed. His deepest love is for CRPGs, immersive sims, and any game whose ambition exceeds its budget. He thinks you're too mean about Deus Ex: Invisible War.
