EXCLUSIVE: Reynaldo Marcus Greene, director of King Richard and Bob Marley: One Love, has launched the Office of Hours, a new filmmaker fellowship at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The fellowship also selected its inaugural class of five filmmakers, all of whom are recent graduates or current students in the graduate film program.
Created to provide emerging filmmakers with access, guidance, and frank dialogue about the creative and professional realities of building a career in film, fellows will join Greene for a series of intimate sessions throughout the academic year on topics such as sound development, material selection, working with actors and collaborators, managing representation and professional relationships, and creating a retreat.
This year's group — Alex Jiang, Mysa Liheb, Skyla Page, Andre Shen and Taylor Sangyun Lee — was selected by a committee of filmmakers including Cassie Lemons, John Tintori, Chiara Bernasconi and Mia Ciofi Henry. (See details on the inaugural class below.) Watch at Deadline
“Coming out of NYU, that was as much access as I needed—someone I could call, ask questions I didn't know to ask, and have an honest conversation about what the profession is really like,” Green says.
He added: "Office hours are my attempt to create this space for the next generation of filmmakers." These five filmmakers are now extraordinary voices. It's not my job to tell them what kind of filmmakers they should become. It's about listening, challenging them, sharing what I've learned, and hopefully helping them get where they want to go."
In 2021, Greene directed King Richard, the coming-of-age story of Venus and tennis player Serena Williams and their father's coach. The picture received six Oscar nominations, including best picture, and won star Will Smith an Oscar for best actor. He followed this up by writing and directing Bob Marley: One Love in 2024. His credits also include the Netflix series We Own This City and Top Boy.
His first feature film, Monsters and Men starring John David Washington, Anthony Ramos and Kelvin Harrison Jr., premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
He is currently working on the Sky TV adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which he is directing and executive producing.
Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, Chair of Tisch's Graduate Film Department, said, “Having this kind of mentorship from a distinguished filmmaker like Ray is an incredible opportunity for our students and recent graduates taking their first steps in the industry.
