Valor Mortis is one of those ambitious experiences that fans of soul-like games have been dreaming of for years. The narrative of the horrors of war from William's point of view is one of the best stories that has entered this genre in recent years, and the dark atmosphere of 19th century Europe is equally impressive and meaningful.
One More Level Studios, the makers of Ghostrunner, are back with a Souls-like game set in a parallel Napoleonic era that combines fluid sword-and-gun combat with breathtaking parkour; A combination that is enjoyable to experience.
Valor Mortis looks like something you'd get from crashing a truckload of used BioShock copies into a GameStop warehouse full of used copies of Dark Souls. The result is a work with a new and different identity that, despite the obvious influence of both collections, does not always succeed in implementing its ideas. When things go as expected, this first-person take on the soul-like genre, armed with a sword in one hand and a fist of fire in the other, is as exciting in action as it sounds in description. Destroying big monsters with a cutlass sword is also fun most of the time. However, not all of Valor Mortis' efforts succeed; The game is dealing with a lot of bugs and technical problems that need to be fixed as soon as possible, and its story relies more on atmosphere than content and depth. Despite these flaws, there are many positives to be found in this unconventional Soulslike, and I'm glad I spent over 20 hours in its dark and intriguing world.
Valor Mortis, with a drop in quality in the second half, turns its back on the high potential it had shown earlier. The game's first-person combat is quick and satisfying, but the limited variety of enemies, the underuse of weapons and abilities, and the lack of challenge ultimately prevent it from shining. Seasoned with dark and supernatural elements, this historical period provides a fresh and fascinating platform for exploration, but it does not host an extensive and captivating story. Instead, there are only short and emotionally charged sub-narratives that partially compensate for this weakness; Narratives that depict the consequences of war well. At the heart of the game are the basic elements of a great title; A work that could have been much better by focusing more on engaging first-person combat and removing the extra mechanics that hurt its successful parts. But as it stands, we're left with a patchy experience that comes off as frustrating as it is enjoyable.
In video game form, Valor Mortis is reminiscent of Napoleon's campaign in Russia: you leave Paris with hopes of winning a few medals, only to end up dying horribly in an alley in the Eastern European countryside. One More Level studio's first-person soul-like will make a strong impression on you at the beginning and stand out with the beautiful design of some enemies and eye-catching scenery. But the main cycle of the gameplay gradually falls out of favor due to the repetition of enemies and the inconsistent design of the stages. The worst problem of the game, however, is the numerous bugs that you encounter during the experience; The problems that culminate in the final third. One of the basses is clearly unfinished; Some of his animations may not work, his hitbox may stop working, or even the enemy may freeze completely in place. Sometimes you may also lose your life in simple skirmishes, because an enemy soldier's foot gets stuck in the geometry of the environment and disrupts the timing of your shots in an irrational way. The wisest decision is to wait for a few updates to be released.
