Presenting the Makkah Agreement to the Turkish Parliament; Opposition of the representatives to the provisions of the agreement
While the President of Turkey has announced his determination to present the Mecca Agreement to the Parliament of this country, some members of the Parliament have expressed their clear opposition to this agreement.
According to Ambassador Arjan, quoted by Al-Akhbar newspaper, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced in a strange move, two months after signing the Mecca Agreement, that he will vote on this agreement in the Turkish Parliament. It seems that Erdoğan's action to get the opinion of the parliament to approve the Makkah agreement is under the pressure of internal criticism and the fear of the country's public opinion about Ankara's involvement in the Yemen war and the doubts raised about the goals of this agreement.
Although Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, trying to calm public opinion, said that his country "will not send troops to Saudi Arabia to attack anyone", it seems that the public opinion of the country is not convinced by this assertion.
At the same time, Murad Yektekin, a Turkish-language writer and journalist, quoted government sources and reported that instead of combat units, "support and training units" will be sent to Saudi Arabia.
While the approval of the mentioned plan in the Turkish Parliament, according to the votes of the groups allied with Erdogan in the Parliament, it seems almost certain; But doubts are growing about why this agreement was presented to the parliament at this point in time and whether its full text will be presented or just a "press statement" will suffice.
Turkish political activist: The blood of Turkish soldiers should not be spilled at the feet of imperialist interests
Although it seems that most of the supporters of Erdoğan in the Turkish Parliament agree with this plan; But some opponents give logical reasons to reject this plan. "Iskander Bayhan", the left-wing vice-chairman of the "Labor" party, believes: "The government behaves as if the agreement was approved in the parliament. The result of this is the shedding of soldiers' blood for the interests of imperialists, domestic capitalists and the interests of the presidential palace, which should not be allowed to happen.
He described the "Makkah coalition" as "a part of the imperialist plan to redistribute the region" and considered Ankara's purpose of this agreement to be "gaining profit from the sale of weapons and receiving financial aid from Saudi Arabia."
From trying to suppress the legitimate Syrian government to strengthening the Saudi government
In this regard, "Ilkay Aksavi", a well-known political activist and member of the "Democratic Party", considered Fidan's words about the "defensiveness and non-aggression of the Makkah coalition" as one of the most misleading and contradictory statements in the history of Turkey and said: "These words do not answer the question of how to guarantee defense without a clear response to the incoming attacks."
He pointed out the duality of the "Justice and Development" party and said: "They, who used to support and equip the opposition armed groups in Syria against the legitimate government, now want to defend the government based in Saudi Arabia, which is supported by America and Israel; An action that is in conflict with the interests of Türkiye."
He added: "Turkey and Pakistan's decision to provide immediate aid to Saudi Arabia was taken without making sure whether the text of the agreement specifies this or not, and it is enough to say that there is an article similar to the fifth article of the NATO Treaty. If there is a clause that does not endanger the lives of our soldiers for Saudi Arabia, then why is the text of the agreement not published?"
In the end, this member of the Turkish parliament said: "Sending Turkish soldiers to Saudi Arabia makes them the target of the Yemenis and endangers our relations with Iran."
Turkey does not want to be Israel's shield
Fatih Erbakan, the head of Türkiye's "New Welfare" party, also said that the purpose of this agreement is to fight Israel's enemies and that Türkiye cannot be Israel's shield. The member states of the Mecca coalition should prepare their forces to defend Gaza, not Saudi Arabia.
On the other hand, Ilhan Özgil, foreign relations coordinator in the main opposition party, the "New Party" led by Özgur Özil, stated: "The government has chosen war instead of peace, and national interests are no longer a criterion in foreign policy."
Recalling Erdoğan's shaky policies, Özgil pointed to his words in 2019, when he said that Saudi Arabia should look in the mirror; Who brought Yemen to this situation?" He emphasized that any agreement that includes a clause saying that an attack on one side is an attack on all, means that you are on the war side. The Justice and Development Party government has accepted to be a part of Donald Trump's regime in the Middle East.
