Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh has joined the project to help complete the final stages of filming The Batman Part II.
According to Deadline's exclusive report, Matt Reeves is currently unable to be on set due to a family issue, and Soderbergh will direct the rest of the project with full backing from DC Studios. However, this change does not mean Reeves is stepping down from the film, and he will still retain creative control of the project.
Soderbergh, who is a long-time fan of Matt Reeves' works, has personally offered to help him. The two directors will be in close contact with each other until the end of filming, and Soderbergh will work with the cast and crew to capture the remaining images in accordance with Henry Reeves' vision. After filming wraps and when Reeves is ready to return, he will take over post-production.
In a statement about accepting the responsibility, Steven Soderbergh praised the quality of Matt Reeves' work on the first episode and explained that his main goal is to continue the creative direction Reeves has set for the series. He said:
I think what Matt Reeves did in The Batman was amazing; A calculated work, precise and very strict in terms of artistic coherence. The goal is to work with Matt and his team to produce visuals that fit seamlessly with the segments that have been filmed so far so that Matt can finish his film properly.
These statements show that Soderbergh's task is not to redefine the style of the film or make fundamental changes in the direction of the story. He is supposed to help complete the rest of the filming, so that the new images are in harmony with the previously recorded sequences and do not make a noticeable difference to the final result.
After publishing this news, Matt Reeves reacted to the issue on social networks and emphasized that he is still part of the project. He praised Soderbergh for accepting the responsibility during a difficult period in his personal life and addressed fans' concerns. Reeves wrote in his message:
Just to be clear, I'm not walking away from The Batman Part II. I am deeply grateful to Steven for helping me complete the principal photography during this difficult time. Thank you all for your concern and kind messages.
The message makes it clear that the change is temporary and intended to help Reeves. He is still considered the main director of the film and according to the announced schedule, he will return to the post-production stages after the end of filming; The steps that include editing and completing the final version of the film.
Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Penguin are also returning actors. Along with the cast of the first part, new faces including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jamie Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch have been added to the cast. However, the full details of the roles of some of the new actors and important parts of the film's story have not been officially revealed yet.
The Batman Part II movie will be released in theaters on February 18, 2028 (Bahman 29, 1406).
