Amazon is in talks to buy artificial intelligence startup Decart in a deal worth around $7 billion. According to knowledgeable sources, this deal has not yet been finalized and it may not come to fruition if the negotiations fail or another buyer enters.
Descartes has developed two artificial intelligence models named Lucy and Oasis. Powered by Nvidia, Lucy can edit live videos on the fly. The Oasis model also produces simulated environments that are used for training and testing robots and autonomous driving systems.
Amazon declined to comment on the report, and Descartes did not respond to requests for comment. The Wall Street Journal reported that a deal could be done in the near future if negotiations do not reach an impasse and another buyer enters the fray.
Descartes' value reached nearly 4 billion dollars in May. This figure was announced based on the data of PitchBook research platform. Last month, Bloomberg reported that Entropic decided not to pursue the purchase of Descartes after due diligence. In August, this company investigated the possibility of buying Descartes in a deal worth 6 billion dollars.
Descartes attracted 300 million dollars in capital in May. The funding round was led by Radical Ventures, with Nvidia joining as a new investor.
