EXCLUSIVE: Los Angeles native Milo Mannheim, 25, who was recently tapped to lead Disney's live-action Tangled , has landed the title role in Michael Showalter's remake of the rom-com Serendipity for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax.
No word yet on what role Mannheim will play. We announced this project in August. Showalter described it as not a direct remake or reboot of the Serendipity series, but a contemporary "refusal" of the original film centered around new characters.
Written by original Marc Klein, the new Serendipity will be executive produced by Showalter and Jordana Mullick for semi-official productions alongside Simon Fields, who produced the original. Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Levy and Tom Zadra are executive producers for Miramax alongside Klein. Emily Kroc is overseeing the Semi-Formal project, which is under a multi-year, first-look deal with Amazon MGM, while Arianna D'Andrea will oversee Miramax.
The 2001 TV series Serendipity, directed by Peter Chelsom and starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, is about an estranged couple who, despite being engaged to other people, fall in love on Christmas Eve in New York. With the separation, their potential future together remains unresolved - until seven years later, each begins to search for the other.
Miramax released the film to great success—grossing more than $77 million worldwide—in a very different moment for the rom-com. Peter Abrams, Robert L. Levy and Simon Fields were the producers of this film.
No word yet on whether the new take will be in theaters or broadcast. But the original celebrated its 25th anniversary with a show at Wollman Rink, the Central Park ice-skating venue that played a memorable supporting role.
Mannheim, most recently seen in School Spirits+ and the Eli Roth horror film, is one of the latest young talents to emerge from the Disney Channel universe to helm major studio projects. He is best known for his role in their Zombies franchise, as well as roles such as Prom Pact, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. and played Camp Rock 3.
Mannheim remains in the Disney family today, as he is currently set to star in the lead role of the charming thief Flynn Rider alongside Teagan Croft.
