The physical revolution in jailbroken PS5s now has people emulating PS3 discs

Coder Swordpdf has released a video showing a physical PS3 copy of Gran Turismo 5 being used to boot the game on PS5, just three days after the PS5SX2 emulator was removed.

Simulation of Sony PlayStation 3 PlayStation 5 artificial intelligence

Almost three days ago, coder Swordpdf unveiled PS5SX2: a Vibecode port of the PCSX2 emulator, which allows users to emulate PS2 games on jailbroken PS5s using physical PlayStation 2 discs. Today, they unveiled the RPS5S3, which allows jailbroken PS5s to do exactly the same thing as physical PS3 discs.

Swordpdf showed off the RPS5S3 emulator in a post on X earlier this morning. As you can clearly see in the video provided in his post, Swordpdf launches Gran Turismo 5 after inserting a physical copy of the PS3 game into the PS5 disc tray.

However, unlike the previous Swordpdf project, it is not currently available for download via GitHub. In fact, it's not even technically finished, as Discord's latest version of the PS5SX2 emulator is titled "RPS5S3 Test Build 3".

This means we don't have a list of PS3 titles that work with the RPS5S3 either. Fortunately, we have an idea of which titles are compatible with the RPS5S3, as a post on the PS5SX2 Discord states that Grand Theft Auto IV, God of War: Ascension, LittleBigPlanet, InFamous, and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift are the emulator's "most played games."

As the name suggests, RPS5S3 is apparently a fork of the RPCS3 emulator that allows emulating PS3 games on a PC. While Swordpdf hasn't confirmed this anywhere, nor is there a GitHub repository to confirm this, it's safe to assume that RPS5S3 is also a Cloud Code venture.

There are two reasons why I think this is safe. For starters, Swordpdf has been quite open about using Claude for the PS5SX2 vibecode, even listing it as a contributor on its GitHub page. Second, the spin on this is frankly confusing. The PS5SX2 was released on October 9th, and a second RPS5S3 demo was released on Swordpdf's Discord yesterday afternoon.

I probably don't need to explain why this timeline suggests some AI-assisted coding was done to achieve this, because if it only took a human two days to port the RPCS3 emulator to the PS5... well, they'd already be doing it pretty well.

Likewise, the RPS5S3 short spin is another big AI-assisted blow for Sony over the past two weeks, as both the PS5 jailbreak's Relapse method and the PlayStation 5's OS emulation on PC have been linked to advances in AI-assisted coding. We might be ready, because these web browser ports of the Vibe code from Halo, The Simpsons: Hit And Run, and GTA: Vice City seem to work perfectly.
