Valdano Reveals/ Atlético's Controversial Rebel's Path Back to Peak Form
Jorge Valdano believes Julián Álvarez should be in Atlético Madrid's starting lineup.
Julián Alvarez has not scored for Atlético Madrid since April 29, 2026 in the Champions League against Arsenal. After controversy during the World Cup and asking to leave Atletico to pursue a "dream", the Argentine forward is looking to cement his place in Simeone's starting line-up and reconcile with the Atletico fans.
Jorge Valdano, who was a Real Madrid player from 1984 to 1987 and coach of this team from 1994 to 1996, examined the conditions that Alvarez is experiencing at Atlético. He told Movie Star Plus: "Should Julián Alvarez play in the first team of Atlético Madrid? If all problems are like this, give me one every week..."
Valdano stated on El Tercer Tiempo program: "Of course, Julián Alvarez should play in the first team of Atlético. Despite the high quality of the players of Atlético Madrid, I think Julián is their best player. Julián Alvarez, at least from my point of view, is the best player in this team. If you want to build a great team, you cannot ignore the best player.
Julian Alvarez seems to have lost his confidence along the way, doesn't it? This happens many times and we have seen the effect that confidence has had on players like Baena. A very positive effect after the World Cup. The problems that Julian Alvarez got into have finally caused him to lose his confidence. All the coach needs to do is to restore his confidence, and for that, there is nothing better than putting him in the starting line-up."
