Citroën 2CV Concept Unveiled: Zhiyan's Forebear Returns with Electric Powertrain

At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Citroën unveiled its 2CV concept, returning to one of its best-known models: a car set to return to the roads with nostalgic styling, modern technology and a fully electric powertrain. By reviving this car, the French automaker aims to bring back the simple, practical and economical spirit of the model […]

By introducing the 2CV concept at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Citroën has gone to one of the most well-known products in its history; A car that is going to return to the streets with a memorable appearance, modern technologies and an all-electric drive. By reviving this car, the French automaker wants to revive the simple, practical and economical spirit of the original model in the form of an urban electric hatchback. The production version of the Citroen 2CV concept will probably arrive around 2028.

One of the interesting points about the new Citroën 2CV concept is that despite the use of modern technologies, it has smaller dimensions than the original model. The length of this car is about 3.7 meters; For comparison, the length of the original generation reached about 3.8 meters. These compact dimensions were chosen quite purposefully, because they make it easier to park the car in busy streets and limited urban spaces. This concept is light and weighs 998 kg. You may know that reducing weight in electric cars is very important; Because the lighter the body, the larger the battery will not be needed to achieve a suitable range of motion. A smaller battery, in turn, can lower the final price. Of course, it remains to be seen how close Citroën will be to its goals in the mass production version.

The minimalist approach of the 2CV concept is not only limited to its dimensions and weight. Flat body panels, simple air intakes in the lower part of the windshield and separate bumpers are among the features designed to simplify the process of manufacturing and repairing the car. The non-uniformity of the shields is of practical importance; Because if a part is damaged, there is no need to replace a large and expensive set. This approach is in complete harmony with the economic and urban automotive philosophy.

Citroën is also working with Michelin on a project called the "Integrated Twin Digital Tire". This technology is designed to monitor the condition of the tires and continuously adapts the behavior of the car taking into account the road conditions and the surrounding environment. The technical details of this system have not yet been fully published, but its purpose is to increase the car's adaptability to different driving conditions.

The general body shape, proportions and soft lines of the Citroën 2CV concept are reminiscent of the classic model. Despite this, designers have tried to harmonize the details with today's standards. The sloping windshield, gently curved roof, prominent fenders and simple body surfaces create a combination that recreates the original identity of the Xian's predecessor while being modern. At the front, round and independent headlights are placed next to the modern LED light signature; A combination that displays the past and present in one frame. The hood of the car also refers to the historical TPV project. TPV stands for the French phrase "Toute Petite Voiture" meaning "very small car"; A project that eventually led to the production of the 2CV. You may know that the famous Xian was also developed based on this model. On the front, there are other details inspired by vintage cars. Visible wipers and air intakes are among these features.

In the side view, the designers have gone to small but meaningful details. The door handles are inspired by those found on the original 2CV, and the slim indicator lights are mounted on the rear roof pillars. The 19-inch steel rims are also a modern interpretation of the classic design. The use of steel rims on a concept car with new technologies creates an interesting contrast and shows that Citroen does not want to design every detail in the style of futuristic electric cars.

In the rear view, the curve of the roof, the black trunk lid that extends to the bumper and the horizontal LED lights have given the car a distinctive look. Even the location of the license plate has a hidden reference to the history of the 2CV.

At a time when many new electric cars are equipped with large and multiple displays, Citroen has chosen a different path for the 2CV concept. The interior of this concept is bright and open, and wide seats with Citroen's Advanced Comfort technology focus on passenger comfort. The front passenger seat is designed with the ability to move outward; Detachable storage baskets and fabric door handles help to make the cabin more practical.

There is no conventional and crowded dashboard in this car. The driver's control suite is formed around a cylindrical structure that houses the steering wheel, control sticks, gear shift lever and the Citroen Smart Vision head-up display. This display reflects essential information in the driver's field of vision so that there is less need to look down to see the main data.

In addition to its minimalist structure, the Citroen 2CV concept is equipped with an 8-inch square touch screen. This display combines digital features with physical controls; An approach that could appeal to drivers tired of the complex menus and multiple settings of touch screens. The user interface graphics are inspired by comic books to give the interior of the car more personality.

Another interesting detail is a device called "Radioën". This detachable radio also doubles as a portable speaker. The driver can remove this part from the car and listen to his favorite music outside the cabin. The folding fabric roof is another tribute to the classic 2CV.

To revive the memories of 2CV, Citroën is not limited to the general form of the body and has also included a series of small details in this concept. The color of the body called "Infra Red" is a combination of orange, yellow and red spectrums and refers to the historic 2CV Spot model.

In the interior, the checkered upholstery of the seats is a modern take on the fabrics used in the old 2CV. This design, along with the warm colors of the cabin, revives the feeling of classic cars; Without the interior looking too old.

Parts of the cabin are designed with Bakelite inspiration. Bakelite was one of the first completely synthetic plastics, which was also used in the manufacture of various parts of early 2CV cars. The use of wood-inspired elements, textured fabrics, wicker-like materials and 3D-printed storage baskets set the interior apart from the cold, conventional cabins of today's electric cars. Even the pedals follow this design language. The symbol of a turtle on the brake pedal and the image of a rabbit on the gas pedal; A simple and funny reference to the difference between slow motion and acceleration.

The compartments built into the doors are another creative detail of this car. Their design is such that they can carry eggs; A topic that goes back to one of the famous requirements in the description of the basic requirements of the 2CV design. These details are a reminder of the philosophy of a car that was developed from the beginning for everyday use and to respond to people's real needs. The sound of the horn and the sound of the electric motor are also inspired by the original car. The ventilation vents under the windshield and the gear selector with a design derived from the umbrella handle are other details that refer to the classic 2CV.

Three numbers 48, 90 and 26 can be seen on the windshield of the Citroen 2CV concept. The number 48 refers to the year of the introduction of the original model, the number 90 indicates the end of its production period, and the number 26 indicates the year of the unveiling of this concept. In this way, Citroën has incorporated the history of this famous car into the design of the new model with a few simple numbers.

Citroën has announced that the production version of the Concept 2CV will be built in Europe, and the target base price for it will be around 15,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 16,000 dollars. If Citroën can offer a production model with a price close to this figure, the new 2CV could become one of the cheaper options to enter the electric car market. Of course, this figure is a preliminary target for now, and the final price of the car at the time of release may be affected by factors such as battery cost, equipment, market conditions and pricing policies. Complete information about the battery capacity, electric motor power, range, charging speed and final equipment of the Citroen 2CV production version has not yet been published. Therefore, in the current situation, it is not possible to make a definitive judgment about its technical performance and its competitiveness with other urban electric vehicles.
