Japan's two major airlines announced on Thursday, October 15, that they will increase fuel surcharges for international flights - for tickets issued in November and December - due to continued high fuel prices and uncertainty caused by conflicts in the Middle East.

According to Ambassador Arjan, the companies "Japan Airlines" (JAL) and "All Nippon Airways" (ANA) will increase the surcharge for one-way tickets to North America and Europe to 62 thousand yen. This figure is the second highest rate recorded in history and has increased by 12,000 yen and 7,000 yen, respectively, compared to the amounts of September and October.

Amid tensions in the Middle East, the surcharge for one-way tickets to the two regions, issued in July and August, had reached an unprecedented ¥65,000. But those surcharges were reduced for tickets issued in September and October, reflecting lower fuel prices after the signing of a preliminary agreement in mid-June between the United States and Iran to end the war.

Regarding flights to China and Taiwan, the additional cost of fuel for All Nippon Airways will increase by 800 yen to 15,100 yen, while this figure for Japan Airlines (JAL) will increase by 3,600 yen to 16,000 yen.

For flights to South Korea, All Nippon Airways will increase this additional fee by 600 yen and Japan Airlines by 1,200 yen to reach 7,100 yen in both cases.

According to Kyodo News, fuel surcharges are amounts that are added to the price of plane tickets in accordance with fuel price fluctuations.
