Greenland in the Crosshairs of Trump's Ambitions: What Lies Behind the Claim of Large-Scale Extraction of Natural Resources?

U.S. President Donald Trump, claiming that large-scale exploitation of Greenland's oil, gas, and mineral resources is nearing, has once again drawn attention to the island's natural resources and strategic position. These remarks come as Washington's efforts to expand its influence in Greenland face sensitivity from Denmark and America's European allies, while extracting the island's resources also involves technical obstacles and heavy costs.

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, once again drew attention to the island's natural resources and strategic location by claiming that the start of large-scale exploitation of Greenland's oil, gas and minerals is imminent. These statements were made in a situation where Washington's efforts to increase influence in Greenland are facing the sensitivity of Denmark and America's European allies, and extracting the resources of this region is also accompanied by technical obstacles and heavy costs.

Ambassador Arjan-International Group: US President Donald Trump claimed in a message on the social network Truth Social that "massive exploitation of oil, gas and minerals in Greenland is about to begin", but did not provide more details about this operation.

He wrote in this message: "There are experts who say that the amount of oil that can be easily extracted is much more than almost any other land anywhere in the world."

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly threatened to take Greenland, an autonomous region under Danish rule, under American control or gain access to its natural resources, including vast and untapped mineral deposits. These threats have angered America's close European partners and NATO allies.

Researchers have previously announced that the extraction of Greenland's minerals will be very difficult and expensive; Because many of the reserves of this island are located in remote areas north of the Arctic Circle, which are covered by a layer of polar ice about one mile thick, equivalent to 1.6 kilometers. About 80% of this island is covered with ice.

Last month, the United States, Denmark and Greenland reached an agreement aimed at helping resolve tensions after Trump threatened to annex the strategically located island.

At the time, Trump claimed that the agreement would guarantee US "permanent control" over Greenland's security; However, the agreement begins with the recognition of Danish sovereignty and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.

According to the text of the agreement published on the White House website, the said agreement makes limited changes to the 1951 treaty; A treaty that allows the United States to deploy its military forces in Greenland within the framework of NATO defense.

The agreement does not explicitly mention oil or gas, but mentions "cooperation in the field of minerals" and "cooperation in the field of economic development and promotion of commercial activities", without providing further details about these cooperations.

The agreement also paves the way for more U.S. military bases and guarantees the country's military access to Greenland if the island becomes independent from Denmark.

In his message, Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social about the strategic importance of Greenland: "Any possible future attack on the United States must be carried out through Greenland; "Where our defense systems will routinely shoot down drones, missiles or any other type of weapon not even imagined yet."

For the first time in recent years, Denmark has deployed its task force to strengthen its military presence in this strategic region at the same time as the American pressure to take over Greenland increased.

In response to Trump's statements, the Danish government emphasized its sovereignty over Greenland and considered the island inalienable.

A member of the Danish parliament warned that if the US tries to occupy the autonomous island of Greenland, there will be a war between Copenhagen and Washington.
