Maryland representative tells woman she's "rude" for laughing during debate
Rep. Andy Harris, MD, speaks to a woman in the audience after being interrupted during a debate against Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.
Maryland's only Republican member of the House of Representatives was heard telling a woman, "You're rude," after she started laughing during a debate.
A fight broke out between Congressman Andy Harris and an audience member in Cambridge on Tuesday as the Republican spoke about rising diesel prices during the US-Iran war.
"Let's get the facts straight, the facts are that diesel, the facts are that the price of diesel has gone up, there's no question about it. Why has it gone up? Because the Democrats have environmental regulations..." Harris said before being interrupted by a woman in the audience laughing.
"Lady, I've got to tell you. The problem is, you all say you believe the First Amendment exists, but only if you agree," Harris told the crowd. "You have to let me finish my sentence, ma'am. You're rude. You're rude, okay?"

Harris then turned to the debate moderator and said, "I'm sorry," adding that if he wasn't going to tell the audience they were being rude, he should do it himself.
Before another member of the audience began to speak, Harris continued, "Let me finish the sentence on why there is a shortage of diesel in the world and in the country."
Do you believe in the First Amendment? Do you believe in my First Amendment right to free speech? "It's my turn to speak, not yours," Harris said.

Harris, who has represented Maryland's first congressional district since 2010, is running for re-election against Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.
The debate host then asked both candidates to address their supporters and ask them to be "polite and respectful" during the debate.
"It's very important that you guys get to hear from both of us tonight, so please, if you don't mind, come save all the reaction for later when you get home and let the congressman speak," Schwartz said.
When it came to Harris, he said, "You don't need to hear from me, because my people don't interfere with Mr. Schwartz's business, it's just a way."
