DDoS Gears Of War: E-Day Microsoft The Coalition
Developer The Coalition has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day was on the receiving end of a DDoS attack over the weekend. The studio explained in a post to the Gears Community X account late Sunday night that this is why people are having trouble logging in and staying in Microsoft's newly launched title.
The post begins: “Earlier today, some players experienced intermittent outages, login issues, or other service disruptions in Gears of War: E-Day. These problems were due to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services.

Such attacks are the most primitive and brutal means of disrupting a service, overloading servers with requests to make legitimate access difficult or impossible. It's also very easy to block or slow them down once they're detected, or after installing a firewall like Cloudflare. It appears that the coalition was able to address the matter within hours, with their post concluding: “Mourners continue to monitor and mitigate this activity. We will provide updates if there are significant changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
However, it comes at a difficult time for the new game, one of Microsoft's bigger releases in 2026, given earlier reports that E-Day sales failed to reach the numbers expected. It apparently flopped despite glowing reviews with a quarter of a million copies sold in its first week and only 62,000 on Xbox.
You can take your pick as to why the game might have been the target of such an attack. Views on Microsoft are pretty hostile right now for a number of reasons, including its dire job cuts in 2026 that could affect the coalition, the larger company's continued support for Israel during the Gaza conflict, and, somewhat inevitably, the naysayers who have decided that the latest Gears game is somehow "woke."
