Mathews warning/ strange advice to Bayern: don't worry about attack, defend!
Lothar Matheus believes that Bayern Munich should focus on defense instead of attacking.
According to "Sports Three", after Bayern Munich's two consecutive draws in the Bundesliga against Augsburg and also in the group stage of the European Champions League against Viking, Mateus sounds the alarm and has an offer for Bayern Munich. The player with the record for the most national games wants Vincent Kompany to change his approach.
"That's why I want to say something, even if it's difficult for me: to be a little less aggressive and, instead, a little more secure in defense wouldn't hurt Bayern," he said at the premiere of the documentary Müller-Wohlfart - Doctor of Champions in Munich. That means avoiding watching last season's high-scoring games, in which Bayern scored 122 goals, at least for a while.
The reason for his concern is the recent performance of this team during the 2-2 draws against Augsburg and 3-3 against Viking. Here, the Bayern legend identified old weaknesses: "Disorganization, not enough coverage, and not keeping positions. "These are the problems that existed last season."
According to Matheus, the attacking style of this Belgian coach is the cause of these problems. He warns that in the Bundesliga, Bayern can maintain this style, but not in the big games: "When everything is at stake in the knockout games, those mistakes can hurt Bayern."
A tough test is ahead: Leipzig, Arsenal, Dortmund and Atletico Madrid are the next opponents. But Matheus surprisingly sees an advantage in this: these top teams won't be as defensive as their previous opponents.
