Autumn Onion Planting Begins in Hormozgan

Bandar Abbas - Director of Agricultural Affairs at the Hormozgan Agricultural Jihad Organization said Hormozgan farmers have begun autumn onion planting on 8,900 hectares of the province's farmland.

Hormozgan Agricultural Jihad Organization Director of Agriculture Bandar Abbas said: Hormozgan farmers started autumn onion cultivation in eight thousand and 900 hectares of agricultural land in the province.

According to Ambassador Arjan Seyyed Reza Amirizadeh, he said: Hormozgani farmers started the autumn cultivation of onions in 8,900 hectares of the province's agricultural lands, and it is expected that about 450,000 tons of onion crops will be harvested from the province's agricultural lands, which is no different compared to last year.

Pointing out that onion production in Hormozgan is 9 times the province's needs, he added: the harvested product is also sent to Afghanistan, Iraq and Persian Gulf countries, and onion cultivation continues until December.

Amirizadeh said: Farmers use the high-yielding and marketable cultivars Taki, Rio Bravo, Skore and Nickerson for cultivation, which are highly popular among farmers due to their compatibility with the hot and humid climate of the province and their resistance to pests.

Hormozgan Agricultural Jihad Organization director added: Bandar Abbas and Minab cities are the most important onion growing areas.

He noted: The onion harvesting season starts at the end of December and continues until the middle of May next year, and Hormozgan ranks second in onion production in the country.
