Josh Hartnett's New Limited Series “Under” Draws Mixed Reactions Over Its Sea Creature Mystery

Josh Hartnett's limited series started strongly with the mystery of its sea creatures, but viewers say the final episodes took strange twists.

People are pretty split on Josh Hartnett's new limited series below.

There's been a lot of buzz surrounding Below since the preview was released, and for one very simple reason:

People love shows about mysterious monsters and a small town with deep secrets.

Netflix has released a new trailer for BELOW starring Josh Hartnett as a fisherman battling a sea creature.

Well, it has just been released and it is sure to get some interesting reactions.

The series focuses on a small fishing community in Canada that finds itself terrorized by an unknown sea creature and a massive iceberg that mysteriously appears in the harbor.

I had the chance to stream it over the course of a few days, and the main problem is that "Below" is basically two different shows spread over six episodes.

One Track is a horror series about an unknown creature that sinks boats and kills people. The second piece (probably?) is supposed to be an uplifting story about understanding nature.

Well, those two things don't exactly go together naturally.

The ending was also a bit of a strange choice. Just after a bow is put on the situation, and the sea creature is driven away, the community discovers even more massive ice floes that harbor even more violent monsters.

So, a limited series ends on a cliffhanger? Make it meaningful. There's also a lot of reaction on Reddit, and it's very different:

"LIONESS" season 3 finale reveals who orchestrated Joe's kidnapping.

It started strong and quickly went downhill, and if you watch until the end you'll see what I mean. I don't want to spoil anything. But I was disappointed that it could have been so much better.

A wonderful concept was completely ruined by introducing too many story lines that made no sense or were opened and left alone without closure. This show was going on too much. The miniseries ending on a "cliffhanger" is just ridiculous and just shows that the writers can't stop throwing more and more randomness into their story.

The first 3 episodes were so exciting, it kept me hooked! I even started recommending it to others. But 4-6 was pretty mediocre, and it made me lose interest, especially the Little Pot Rock side story that came out of nowhere and ended nowhere. Do the bunch of icebergs they show at the end represent more gigantic creatures rising from the depths? I feel like it had the potential to be a great show, but something went wrong in episode 4.

It's a fun small-town atmosphere with a mystery (at first). They don't stick the landing though. The story has some unexplained and quite strange twists and turns. The first four episodes are fun. The last two parts are rough

I wanted it to have a more spooky season vibe and it was just bad accents and a confusing plot.

Yeah it started off really strong and then it didn't get as dark as I expected, episode 5 was a little weird. Overall I really enjoyed it, I felt it was worth watching but it didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for. Still a solid 8/10 for me. It was maintained by high production value and intrigue.

All the tropes in 6 parts. It was nice that some parts strained credulity when it tried to take itself seriously.

Here's my breakdown of what went well and what didn't with "Below."

Outstanding acting by Josh Hartnett and Charlie Heaton.

The first few episodes are really solid and set the tone for a big horror mystery

The ending seemed childish and then felt unnecessary with the cliffhanger.

As each episode passed, the accents became more annoying.

The whole story of the cult was quite strange.

If you have free time and are interested in the genre, "Below" is probably worth checking out. It's a shame it couldn't stick the landing and turn something that felt mediocre into something outstanding. Have you seen it before? Let me know what you think at @David.Hookstead.
