CD Projekt Red has finally spoken about the live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie. The company stated that it does not want to make a 1:1 adaptation of the game, but instead tells a new story in the same universe.

"At this point, we can only say that we definitely don't want to make a film adaptation of the game," PAP Biznes Polish CEO Michal Nowakowski said via GamesRadar. "We want to tell a story in the Cyberpunk world, but it won't be a one-to-one translation of the game's story."

Cyberpunk is being co-produced by Paramount, which is now under the Skydance banner after a recent merger. The film will be produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, the actor of the live-action Transformers.

It'll be interesting to see how far the film strays from the game, which features a freelance mercenary named V who has a mysterious computer chip implanted in his brain and ends up being possessed by Keanu Reeves' digital ghost Johnny Silverhand. Personally, I'd love for them to go back, bring Reeves back in, and tell Silverhand's story before he gets stuck in the chip.

Of course, the universe of Cyberpunk—created by tabletop RPG designer Mike Pondsmith—is vast enough to tell a wide range of original stories. This is fertile ground for drawing on themes of identity, autonomy, and the self as the ship of Theseus that needs to be reformed and reprinted.

It seems to be a similar approach that the company has taken for animation. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners feels like a faithful multimedia project in the universe created by CDPR - featuring locations and characters from the game world - but tells a fresh story about the main characters in its dystopian post-human hellscape.

Trigger Studios' animated series returns to Netflix this month, when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 launches on October 20. Check out IGN's interview with the creators of Edgerunners for the lowdown.

CD Projekt also recently announced that work has officially begun on Project Hadar, its first game set in its original universe. The company has previously only played in other people's worlds, with The Witcher based on a novel and Cyberpunk based on a tabletop RPG.

Elsewhere in CD Project Land, The Witcher 3 just received a remaster on consoles and PC that saw some changes to the iconic RPG. There were some issues with the new visuals, particularly the heavy flourishes in The Witcher 3 remake, but CDPR was quick to look into it. And of course, Cyberpunk 2 is in the works, though it feels like years away.

Should Johnny Silverhand return for Cyberpunk 2?

It depends on how you manage it (let us know in the comments!)
