A Past Still Being Told

This time, the latest publications in the Arab world turn to five books in the fields of literature, history, media, sports, and sociology. These works narrate and examine the experience of exile, historical memory, and social transformations in Iraq, Egypt, Syria, and Palestine.

Iranian Ambassador Arjan International Service (Ambassador Arjan); Five new books from publishers of the Arab world examine various aspects of the history and social experience of this region. Meanwhile, an autobiographical novel written by an Iraqi director deals with the experience of exile and return, the memories of an Egyptian radio personality narrate part of the country's media and music history, and a historical research reviews the relations of Copts with political power in Egypt. Recording the history of Syrian football and basketball and examining the impact of exile on Palestinian consciousness and culture are also the subject of two other books.

These works are placed in the fields of literature, history, media, sports and sociology, and each of them approaches individual and collective experiences in the Arab world from a different angle.

"Passerby"; Memoirs of an Iraqi director

The novel "The Passerby" written by Leith Abdul Amir, an Iraqi director, has been published by Literature Publishing House. In this work, the author re-reads his life through the lens of memories that are connected with the contemporary history of Iraq and the experiences of exile and return.

Abdul Amir uses cinematic techniques to narrate his life. He chooses scenes from the past, puts them together in a new way and explains them. His experience in film editing gives a special rhythm to the narrative of the novel and does not limit the structure of the work to a linear retelling of memories.

The center of the story is the experience of a refugee who insists on returning to Iraq. After returning, he is faced with memories, events and feelings that have been accumulated in his mind during the years of being away. During this encounter, the novel also examines the effect of time on memory and changing the meaning of past events; Events that are seen from a new perspective by changing the narrator's position and distancing him from his previous experiences.

"Passerby" talks about the connection of individual life with the general history of Iraq and turns the return to the motherland into an opportunity to face the past again.

Omar Batisheh's life and memories of more than half a century of radio activity

The book "My Testimony of an Era" written by Omar Batisheh, an Egyptian media figure, has been published by Sepideh Dam Publishing House. In this work, Batisheh reviews his more than fifty years of radio activity and talks about his experiences in programming, professional relations and media developments in Egypt.

A part of the book is dedicated to his activity in preparing radio programs, including the "Shahedi Bar Asr" program. The author also talks about his relationship with Arab music stars and the songs he wrote for artists such as Wardeh, Sabah, Faizeh Ahmed and Samira Saeed.

Batisheh also talks about the competition between Umm Kulthum, Mohammad Abdul Wahab and Abdul Halim Hafiz over playing patriotic songs. Differences between media people and how media policies are formed are other topics of the book.

In this work, the history of the media is linked with the political developments in Egypt. The failure of 1967 and the October 1973 war are among the events that the author examines the role of radio in them. He examines the place of this media in mobilizing public opinion and influencing the audience.

Copts and power relations in Egyptian history

The book "Coptians and the Ambiguous Muslim State" written by Ahmed Sabra, an Egyptian researcher, was published by Ain Publishing House. In this research, Sabra examines the period of arrival of Arabs in Egypt and the relations of Copts with political power between 642 and 832 AD.

The author criticizes the common narratives about the justice of the rulers and their behavior towards the residents of Egypt. He also examines the effect of the sanctification of religious figures on the formation of historical narratives; A problem that can keep some historical behaviors and practices away from critical examination.

Concepts such as the government, obedience and the relationship between the ruler and the people are at the center of the book. By highlighting the experience of the Copts, Sabra tries to examine the common narrative of the arrival of the Arabs in Egypt and the formation of the Islamic period from another angle.

This work deals with one of the important topics of Egyptian social history: how religious groups are represented in historical narratives and the role of power relations in the formation of these narratives.

Record the history of Syrian football and basketball

The book "Memory of Syrian Stadiums: Football and Basketball Archive" written by Mohammad M. Reza Saadi, researcher, has been published by Ramina Publications. This book records the history of the two fields of football and basketball in Syria and follows their evolution from the beginning to the competitions of recent years.

In this work, Saadi has documented the performance of Syrian national teams in men's and women's divisions and different age groups in Arab, regional, continental and international competitions. The results of the competitions, the composition of the teams, the names of the players and coaches and the formation process of the competitions are among the information collected in this archive.

The research relies on a set of written sources and sports documents; From printed newspapers and their digital versions to the records of Syrian sports federations and international institutions.

This book preserves a part of Syria's social memory by recording sports competitions, faces and achievements and makes it possible to follow the paths of different generations of athletes.

Exile and formation of Palestinian consciousness

The book "Palestinians and Exile: A Research on the Structure of Consciousness and Culture" written by Mohammad Naeem Farhat, professor of sociology, with an introduction by Faisal Darraj, a Palestinian critic, has been published by the Returned Publications.

In this work, Farhat examines the exile of Palestinians as a human, cultural and intellectual experience, the consequences of which go beyond geographical separation and distance from the land. Memory, identity, sense of belonging and trying to recover meaning are among the topics that are included in the author's analysis.

The book deals with the impact of exile on the formation of Palestinian consciousness and culture and examines the relationship between loss, historical experience and resistance. In this framework, resistance is introduced as a part of the lived experience of Palestinians and a necessity for survival in difficult conditions.

This research tries to show how exile permeates the intellectual and cultural structure of a society and how the experience of being away from the land is reflected in the collective memory, identity and ways of dealing with history.

Five books and rereading historical experiences

These five works approach the history and society of the Arab world from different directions. Leith Abdul Amir's novel links personal history to the developments in Iraq; Omar Batisheh's memoirs record part of the history of Egyptian media and music; Ahmad Sabra's research reviews religious and political relations in the history of this country; The book of Mohammad M. Reza Saadi documents Syrian sports memory and Mohammad Naeem Farhat's research examines exile from the perspective of Palestinian consciousness and culture.

These works show that personal memories, sports documents, historical research and sociological studies can each illuminate a part of the experience of Arab societies; Experiences in which the past, identity and collective memory are still the subject of narration and rethinking.
