Kristi Tanner Steps Down as CEO of New York Public Radio
Jenna Wiss-Berman, Gary Nell and Lafontaine Oliver to Temporarily Lead Parent Organization That Oversees Gothamist, WNYC and More
Christy Tanner is stepping down as president and CEO of New York Public Radio, the media company announced Tuesday.
In his place, three longtime board members and media leaders will form an office of CEO: Jenna Weiss-Berman, Gary Nell and LaFontaine Oliver, who will also serve as interim CEO. New York Public Radio did not give a reason for Tanner's departure.
New York Public Radio is home to news stations and sites including WNYC, WQXR, WNYC Studios, Gothamist, New Jersey Public Radio, as well as The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space.
Weiss-Berman co-founded Pineapple Street Studios and now leads podcasts at Amy Poehler's Paper Kite Productions, including Good Hang. Knell previously served as president and CEO of NPR, CEO of Sesame Workshop, and executive director of National Geographic. Oliver previously served as President and CEO of New York Public Radio and now serves as Chairman of the Board of Public Media Infrastructure.
Tanner took the job in February after previously serving as CEO of TV Guide Digital and executive vice president and GM of CBS News Digital. He took over the position after the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helped fund public media, was shut down due to federal budget cuts.
The board of directors will conduct a search for the next permanent leader of New York Public Radio.
"We are grateful to Jenna, Gary and LaFontaine for doing this," said John Rose, chairman of the board. Together, they bring decades of experience in public media, journalism and management and a deep knowledge of NYPR. We are confident in their ability to support our employees and serve our audiences as we search for our next president and CEO."
