In their opening statement at the actor-comedian's rape trial in London, prosecutors claimed Russell Brand was "cruel and calculated" with an "unbridled and greedy" desire for sexual contact.

Brand has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. He has pleaded not guilty and denied all charges.

Entering Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday morning, Brand wore a black suit, striped shirt, wide white tie and sunglasses. He was accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher, who clasped his hand. "I feel blessed. Of course I feel worried, but I hope this process leads to good results for everyone - that's my prayer," Brand told reporters on the way inside, according to BBC News. Inside the court, Brand appeared to be rubbing what looked like a rock or pebble in his hand. Carmi Jones claimed that Brand was "cruel and calculated" and "may sometimes tell women what they want to hear" to satisfy his sexual appetite. "The circumstances of this crime were as wide and varied as the defendant's career.

Carmi Jones describes the brand as "a mistress with a voracious appetite for sex—childish, waiting for her every desire to be fulfilled."

A jury consisting of eight men and four women was selected on Tuesday. The case involves six female complainants, all of whom are automatically granted anonymity under UK law, and relates to alleged offenses that took place between 1999 and 2009.

In the mid-2000s, Brand became more known as a comedian and actor, starring in shows like "Big Brother Big Mouth" and acting in movies like "He's Greek" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." He has since turned to podcasting and online influencers.

The trial is expected to last six weeks.
