Qatar Admits Strait of Hormuz Closure Hit Its Exports
The Emir of Qatar announced today, Tuesday, that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damage to gas facilities have halted a major portion of Qatar's exports.
The Emir of Qatar announced on Tuesday that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the damage caused to the gas facilities have stopped an important part of Qatar's exports.
According to the report of Ambassador Arjan, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in his annual speech in the Qatari Council, said that Qatar and the region faced unprecedented events and the institutions of the Qatari government once again showed their unity.
The Emir of Qatar emphasized that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the damage in Ras Lafan stopped an important part of Qatar's exports.
He added that Qatar supplies about one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas trade, and any damage to this sector will inevitably affect markets and consumers.
The Emir of Qatar stated that in this crisis, Qatar shouldered the responsibility of protecting its sovereignty and played its role in energy security and global economy.
According to him, Doha participated in the ceasefire efforts and the reopening of waterways.
He also said that the security of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council countries and preserving their sovereignty cannot be tolerated.
Tamim bin Hamad emphasized that Qatar has always preferred to resolve disputes through negotiation and diplomatic and peaceful means and continues to work with regional countries and international partners to keep the region safe and stable.
In the economic sector, the Emir of Qatar said that his country's economy has resisted the current crisis and maintained a high growth rate in 2025. He attributed this situation to the policies adopted in Qatar before the crisis, which allowed the country to absorb the consequences until now.
The Emir of Qatar emphasized that Qatar will not come out of this crisis unless it is more flexible and adaptable to global changes. He also called what is happening in Gaza a genocide.
Currently, in October 2026, the export of Qatar's liquefied gas has been severely affected, and it is expected that the export volume of this country will fall to about 0.6 million tons in this month.
Meanwhile, last September, Qatar's exports reached 1.6 million tons, which was the highest figure since the beginning of the war, but it was still less than a quarter of the pre-war average.
In previous months, Qatar's exports had suffered a heavy blow, so that in the period from April to June 2026 (April to July), the country's exports fell to less than 2 million tons, which shows a decrease of more than 90% compared to about 20 million tons the previous year.
The main cause of this situation was the Iranian missiles hitting the Ras Lafan complex on March 18, 2026, which damaged two LNG production lines and destroyed about 17% of Qatar's export capacity.
This damage costs Qatar about 20 billion dollars annually, which is equivalent to more than a third (about 35%) of the total annual revenues of the Qatari government, and it will take three to five years to completely repair it.
In addition, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and security threats against ships caused the passage of Qatar's LNG cargoes through this strategic waterway to be severely limited.
However, since late September and early October, some Qatari tankers have been able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, but export volumes are still far from pre-war levels.
