Why Is Iran's Economic Future Hard to Predict?
The continuation of the war and the economic blockade have made it difficult to predict Iran's economic future. Before the war, the International Monetary Fund had projected Iran's economic growth for this year at 1.1%, but in its latest report, this figure for 2026 has fallen to minus 7.6%.
The International Monetary Fund recently revised its forecast of Iran's economic growth next year.
According to the report of Dunya Ekhtaz, based on this forecast, Iran's economic growth in 2026 has decreased compared to the previous forecast in July and has reached negative 7.6% from minus 5.4%. The economic growth forecast for 2027 has improved by 0.7 percentage points and reached 3.6%.
International institutions are also facing considerable difficulty in evaluating the path of Iran's economy; The difficulty that comes more than anything from the continuation of the war, the economic blockade and the risks in the field of foreign relations.
In such a situation, forecasting macroeconomic variables, especially inflation and economic growth, has become a complicated task. In January 2026, before the war, the International Monetary Fund predicted Iran's economic growth of 1.1 percent for the same year and 1.6 percent for 2027.
In the April report, about a week after the implementation of the ceasefire, Iran's economic growth forecast for 2026 reached minus 6.1 percent. In the same report, the outlook for 2027 was relatively positive, and 3.2 percent growth was considered for it.
In the July report, the growth forecast for 2026 reached minus 5.4% with a slight improvement, and the next year's growth estimate was 2.9%. However, with the continuation of the economic blockade and the change of assumptions regarding the future conditions of Iran's economy, the International Monetary Fund adjusted its estimate again in the October report and reached a contraction of 7.6% this year.
Internally published data on the performance of Iran's economy also indicate the severity of the recession; However, the difference in the time period and the method of calculating the indicators should be taken into account in their interpretation.
According to the announcement of Iran Statistics Center, the economic growth in the spring of 1405 has reached negative 10.1%. This figure indicates the significant contraction of economic activities at the beginning of the year and shows that the shocks to the economy, at least in this period, have had a severe impact on production.
Current outlook of Central Bank's monetary and banking research institute shows that the economic growth in the quarter ending in July 1405 compared to the same period of the previous year was negative 5.6%. This estimate indicates the relative improvement of the economic situation compared to the previous months.
However, these two figures should not be directly compared with each other regardless of the difference in statistical periods, data coverage and estimation methods.
The totality of these evidences shows that predicting the path of Iran's economy has become more dependent on political and military scenarios than ever before.
The change of 8.7 percentage points in the economic growth estimate for 2026 in the reports of the International Monetary Fund, the increase in the inflation forecast and the difference between the estimates related to the current performance of the economy, all emphasize the high uncertainty in the Iranian economy.
In such a situation, it is not possible to talk about the definite improvement of the economic situation based solely on the positive growth predicted for next year, nor should the increase in the inflation estimate be considered as an inevitable path. Both variables can be affected by changing assumptions about war, economic blockade and foreign policy.
