Amazon Leo's satellite internet network, a competitor to Starlink, achieved download speeds of more than 400 Mbps in a test for the US military. This test was conducted using the Leo Pro antenna at the US Army Test Center in Maryland. Amazon plans to conduct more military tests and launch its commercial service later in 2026.
The US Army Combat Capability Development Command's DEVCOM C5ISR Center hosted the test at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Participants with a laptop sent and received data through this network as newly launched Leo satellites passed over the test site. More than 30 representatives of the US Army were present in this program.
Amazon says that the download speed in this test has reached more than 400 Mbps. This figure also exceeds the maximum download speed announced for the Leo Pro antenna. However, the company hasn't released details about upload speeds, network latency, or average data transfer speeds during testing; Therefore, it is not clear how stable the recorded speed was during the experiment.
Amazon and the U.S. military plan to conduct further tests focusing on higher-speed communications, using satellite Internet on the go, and integrating the technology with the military's existing tactical networks. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to transfer experimental capabilities to usable equipment for soldiers in the field.
The Leo Pro antenna, which was used in the US Army test, has dimensions of about 28 x 28 cm and weighs approximately 2.4 kg. Amazon places this product between its two other antennas: Leo Nano with 7-inch dimensions and a maximum download speed of 100 Mbps and Leo Ultra, which is designed for enterprise customers. According to Amazon, the Leo Ultra can reach download speeds of 1 Gbps and upload speeds of 400 Mbps.
Amazon has built more than a thousand satellites for the Leo system, of which nearly 400 are in low-Earth orbit. In contrast, SpaceX's Starlink network has more than 11,000 satellites.
