Spoiler alert! This post contains details from Tuesday's episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Another week, another night of Dancing with the Stars.
It's the first Super Bowl night in the ballroom, so the remaining couples dance to songs from former Super Bowl performers, including Shakira, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and more. As we know, Disney loves synergy and this is no exception as ABC and ESPN host this season's big game.
ESPN's Monday Night Football lead play-by-play announcer Joe Buck joins the judges tonight. Don't expect any sophisticated commentary from her, given that she tells the audience early on that she has no idea about the technical aspects of any of the dances, but she's excited. Let's dive into Super Bowl night. Watch on Deadline
Reality star Maura Higgins with Mark Ballas. The two are still on cloud 9, literally, after getting their first 9 of the season last week from Carrie Ann. This week, they're dancing a tango to Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)." In his introductory package before the performance, he appears to be struggling with neck pain, so it may be difficult to stay in the frame. He definitely comes across a bit stiff, but otherwise power through. Carrie Ann tells her, "Maura, once again a beautiful performance" but reminds her that her movement needs to be more "pointed" in Latin dances. Score: 33 out of 40
Savannah Bunnans midfielder Jackson Olson with Emma Slater. The pair have been at No. 2 for the past two weeks, and Olson also has to prepare for the Banana Bowl (which ended this weekend), so who's to say how she'll do with a salsa to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk." Not sure how much salsa was in the finished product, but they sure packed the energy. "I think that was your best dance," says Derek. "I just felt like you were really committed and owned that floor." Score: 31 out of 40
Olympian Amber Glenn with Pasha Pashkov. They got good feedback on their rumba last week, but weren't too excited about going down the leaderboard. Their topsy-turvy split is also going viral on social media, so they're excited to hit the dance floor again and raise the bar. This week, they perform a samba to "Mi Gente" by Jay Balvin and Willie Williams. "She knows how to get the party started!" Bruno says, hinting that he's finally playing more of a dance style, as the judges have been asking him for weeks. Score: 34 out of 40
Reality star Tyler Cameron with Sharna Burgess. The past two weeks have given the judges their "success dance" of the season, and now it's Cameron's time to shine as a former football player. He's jazzing up The Time (Dirty Bit) by the Black Eyed Peas, and Burgess is really focusing on his balance (which is kind of non-existent). The song was perfect for him, as the judges already compared him to Patrick Swayze, and yes, they clearly nailed it... "Tyler, I love to dance dirty!" Bruno says he also compliments his progress on his timing and form. Score: 30 out of 40
Comedian and podcast Connor Wood with Riley Arnold. Their scores dropped a bit last week, so this is another opportunity for Wood to samba to Shakira ft. "Hips Don't Lie." Wyclef Jean proves that he has hip action in him. And you know what? Those hips were doing something! "You really didn't have the right footwork for the samba," Bruno told him. It can hardly be said that his sins were worse than those of other men before him, whose legs could be used for finesse, but hey! Score: 25 out of 30
Actress Julia Stiles with Ezra Sosa. The movie star also experienced a breakthrough last week and seems to be really enjoying the experience now that he's let loose a bit. There is nowhere to go but up from here! Styles says he jazzed up the queen himself to "Jenny from the Block" [Song Masters Remix] by Jennifer Lopez and Jadakiss and Styles, who also paid tribute to her Save the Last Dance right in front of co-star Sean Patrick Thomas. "I know this is the wrong picture, but I think we've just been served!" Carrie Ann shouts. Score: 33 out of 40
Actress Tatiana Ali with Yan Raunik. The Fresh Prince star was a bit hurt from Carrie Ann 6 last week, so she's really looking to improve this week. He and Raonic are dancing a salsa to Kendrick Lamar's "Squabble Up," which is a fun combination that the judges unfairly scored against them. Derek and Carrie Ann both say it might be too slow for a salsa (maybe they should have been given a song higher than 100 bpm), but Joe Buck says it was his favorite song of the night! "You got it," Bruno assures her, but asks her to go further. Score: 29 out of 40
Guillermo Rodriguez's Late Night Fan With Whitney Carson. Jimmy Kimmel's right-hand man thinks the judges may have been having a bad day after receiving yet another low rating of the week. Whitney doesn't think so, and she really thrives on his technique. He's interrupted for teaching a salsa to Bad Bunny's "Tití Me Preguntó," but Guillermo is looking for a 6, especially from Carrie Ann. "You took the note and did something!" He tells her. Score: 22 out of 40
Actress Jenna Dewan with Val Chmerkovskiy. This week's performance will be all about passion, as the two dance a paso doble to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." Duane is also filming The Rookie, so things get challenging when Wall practices his technique — even on set between takes. "Moonlight! Thrilling from start to finish!" Bruno shouts. Score: 36 out of 40 (9 seconds straight!)
Actor Harry Shum Jr. with Jenna Johnson. The Grey's Anatomy actor is finally feeling like a leading man, and getting into the groove, he's doing a samba to "Yeah!" by Usher ft. Lil Jon & Ludacris. Shum Jr. got to see Usher's halftime performance live, so hopefully he can bring some of that same energy to the ballroom, but he needs to remember that this is a Latin dance, not a hip-hop routine. Carrie Ann said: "If it was a halftime show, it would be amazing. I loved every minute of it. But, it's a samba." "You need to put more substance into your dances." Score: 33 out of 40
Paralympic champion Ezra Frech with Danila Karagach. Elevating their roles this week, the two praise the judges for their week four rumba. For Super Bowl night, they perform a salsa to Nelly's "Hot in Herre." Frech wants to bring a decade of lost partying to the ballroom tonight. (He was training for the Paralympics. Derek says, “I really get lost in your performances, great way to close the show.” Score: 36 out of 40 (another straight set of 9 seconds!)
In a move that upset viewers, but was to be expected at some point, Guillermo and Whitney will be sent home on Tuesday night. Next week is Dedication Night, where the remaining stars will honor someone or something special in their lives.
