James Gunn Says He Welcomes Making a Batman Beyond Film at DC Studios
Batman's place in DC's new cinematic universe (DCU) is one of the biggest questions about the new universe Gunn is shaping. Fans are discussing a range of topics, from casting choices to a version of the Dark Knight
Batman's place in the new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) is one of the biggest questions about the new world that James Gunn is shaping.
Fans have been debating topics ranging from casting to which version of the Dark Knight should be announced sooner, and Gunn's new comment has heated up the conversation once again. The idea of making a Batman Beyond movie has been discussed in Warner Bros. circles for more than two decades. This series was first introduced in 1999 as an animated series, and since then there have been several talks of making a live-action version of it. Even Michael Keaton's name has been seen many times in rumors and lists of actors suggested by fans, but none of these efforts have led to the production and release of the film.
Now James Gunn has once again drawn attention to this idea. At the red carpet ceremony of the Clayface movie screening and in an interview with the magazine ¡HOLA! USA stated that they are very interested in Batman Beyond and consider it an interesting idea for the future. Gan also explained that this work was first created as an animation and has the capacity to become a successful movie; However, he did not announce any definite project or a specific timeline for its construction.
The DC account also mentioned the possibility of making this film by publishing a part of Gunn's speech on the X social network. Gan said in this interview:
I really like Batman Beyond. This work can be a very good option for the future. I think that this idea, which was first formed in the world of animation, has the capacity to become a good movie.
The Batman Beyond animated series was created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. The series aired in 1999 as a futuristic sequel to Batman: The Animated Series. The story is about Terry McGuinness, a young man who takes on the responsibility of protecting the city in the future after the aging Bruce Wayne steps down as Batman.
After putting away the Batman cape and mask, Bruce Wayne lives a secluded life in his mansion. But when Terry stumbles upon an advanced Batman suit, his life changes. Bruce becomes his guide and the relationship between these two characters forms the main axis of the story; A story about the transfer of a hero's legacy from one generation to another.
This story structure can make Batman Beyond an attractive option for DC's shared cinematic universe. This collection provides the possibility of telling an independent story about Batman, without the need to tell the origin of this character again from the beginning; A topic that the audience has seen many times in different works.
Attempts to make a live-action version of this series have a long history. In 2000, Boaz Yakin was selected to co-write and direct Batman Beyond, but the project never went into production. A few years later, there were rumors that Warner Bros. was planning to make a movie centered around an aging Bruce Wayne and starring Michael Keaton. This idea was welcomed by fans; Especially because of Keaton's stellar record in 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns.
In recent years, film reporter Jeff Snyder reported that a Batman standalone project starring Michael Keaton and written by Christina Hudson was shelved after new management by James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC. Umberto Gonzalez from Media de Rap also announced that the project in question was actually the Batman Beyond movie. However, DC Studios has yet to confirm any of these reports.
Currently, DC's plans for Batman are focused on another project. The movie The Brave and the Bold, announced in 2023 and directed by Andy Muschietti, is supposed to introduce Batman in the new DC Cinematic Universe. The story of this film will focus on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian, and other members of the Batman family will also be present.
An actor has not yet been chosen to play the role of Batman in this film. Also, the version of Batman in the DCU is supposed to be independent from The Batman film series directed by Matt Reeves; Therefore, these two narratives will take place in separate story worlds.
