Kimberly Guilfoyle is likely to face a Senate investigation after claims surfaced that she sought to pay off $100,000 in personal credit card debt using money from a Trump donor.

Marco Rubio warns that Western civilization is at a crossroads during a speech in Greece

During a speech in Athens, Greece, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Western civilization is facing a critical crossroads.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece, may soon be the target of a Senate investigation following a bombshell report accusing her of influence peddling.

It follows a Wall Street Journal report that he pressured Guilfoyle to settle $100,000 in personal credit card debt from a top donor to President Donald Trump before being confirmed as ambassador to Greece.

And a senior Senate Republican believes an investigation could soon follow that report. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that "what we've seen in the reports is very troubling, troubling."

"And I'm sure there will be an investigation," Barrasso said.

He continued: "I assume the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will do this. "I know the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be looking into it as well. But I think the public has a right to know what was found, and it's a little disturbing."

Barrasso's prediction comes as accusations against Guilfoyle and his presence in Athens mount, and there is speculation that his tenure in the role is coming to an end. The State Department's Office of Inspector General, the agency's watchdog, has already opened an investigation into Guilfoyle for prior misconduct.

The Daily Mail reported that an investigation is underway into Guilfoyle's luxury lifestyle in Greece, which includes allegations of mistreatment of staff, substance abuse, close ties to an energy and construction company and improperly accepting gifts.

The latest allegation against him is that he allegedly asked Trump donor Eric Dieters to pay a $100,000 American Express bill directly to a credit card company, asked him to leave no paper trail, and offered to help him gain access to top government officials in exchange. Deters said he never paid.

Rubio responded to the accusations shortly after the Wall Street Journal report, saying, "You guys think that because a source told you something and you reported it, that's gospel."

"That's not the gospel," Rubio said. "That's not the gospel to me. That's not the way we do things."
