CPU, RAM and SSD Now Make Up 68% of the Cost of Building a $900 Laptop
Rising component costs can lead to higher prices for finished products.
An increase in the cost of parts can lead to an increase in the price of final products.

The continuous increase in the price of computer parts has now put pressure on the laptop market, and this trend is expected to affect the global supply of laptops next year.
Buying computer parts separately or getting ready-made systems and laptops has become more difficult than before due to the sharp increase in the price of parts. The prices of graphics cards, memory and SSDs continue to rise, and now with processors becoming more expensive, the entire hardware market is under pressure. This situation occurs while there are signs of decreasing demand in the market and puts more pressure on producers.
A new report by TrendForce Institute shows that these factors may cause a noticeable decrease in the supply of laptops in 2027. According to the latest survey of this institute, it is expected that the global supply of laptops will face a few percent decline in the next year. However, if the prices of processors and DRAM memory remain high, the supply reduction rate may reach a higher range and increase to several percent more; Because producers will pass on additional costs to consumers.
In early 2026, improved availability of processors, early procurement of components by manufacturers and the advance of orders that were supposed to be booked in later quarters, made the supply situation of laptops still relatively favorable. However, this situation does not necessarily mean a sustainable improvement of the market; Because some consumers have replaced their devices earlier than planned.
On the other hand, the inventory of cheaper laptops and parts is gradually decreasing. As a result, manufacturers are now feeling more pressure from rising CPU, DRAM, and SSD prices.
According to the Trendforce report, these three parts alone accounted for about 68% of the cost of parts needed to make a mid-range laptop with a price of $900 in the third quarter of 2026.
In such a situation, laptop manufacturers are faced with three difficult choices: increase the final price of their products, accept additional costs and reduce their profit margins, or reduce the technical specifications of the devices.
Each of these options has its own risks and can lead to a decrease in demand, a drop in profitability or a weakening of the competitiveness of products. For example, an increase in the final price may drive buyers away from the market; Absorbing additional costs also reduces manufacturers' profits, and lowering hardware specifications can make products less attractive to competitors.
Due to the increase in production costs and supply chain management, manufacturers are expected to re-evaluate their production strategies. Trendforce predicts that the share of global laptop production outside of China, which was about 24% in 2025, will decrease to 21% in 2026, and it is even possible to reach less than 20% in the future.
I have been writing professionally in the field of technology since 2016, and my main focus is on hardware, digital market and consumer products analysis. During these years, I have tried to move beyond the mere introduction of products, and with an analytical approach, I have examined market trends, brand strategy, and the real value of each product for the Iranian user. My interest in technology is not only limited to technical specifications; For me, every product is a story of engineering decisions, business competition and user experience. From covering news and developments in the industry to compiling buying guides and analyzing daily market prices, I try to provide accurate, up-to-date and practical information so that the audience can make a more informed decision. I believe that technology journalism is not just news transmission; Rather, it is the translation of the complex world of technology into a clear, understandable and reliable language for the audience.
