Avatar: Seven Havens Episode 3 Notes on the Return of the 'My Cabbages!' Boy
With the release of Avatar: Seven Havens, I decided to subscribe to Paramount+ just to watch it. After reviewing the first three episodes, I can honestly say I'm excited. With the show's creators returning to the project, it feels like ATLA is original.
So when I started watching Seven Havens, one question in my mind was whether or not the cabbage joke could really be addressed in the show. The first few episodes feature a dusty, post-apocalyptic world that doesn't seem immediately conducive to growing cabbage. Most of the food you see in the first few episodes is brown, and the foliage looks oddly geometric as the characters make their way across the environment. But there is a scene in episode 3 that hints at the possibility of a Cabbage Man.
Without going into any spoilers about the episode or the series so far, I wanted to check out the above specific screenshot from episode 3 of the series. Specifically, this is the first time we've seen anything that looks like cabbage. While it appears to be a type of cauliflower here, its presence indicates that such cabbage-growing stems exist in this world. Cauliflower and cabbage are both cruciferous vegetables that have very similar growing conditions. Cabbage is actually easier to grow than cauliflower.
So now that we know that cabbages probably exist in this new environment, it seems like we'll be referring to "my cabbages" in a way, but it's inevitable. Gag later in the series I would be very surprised if the creators of this particular series chose to remove a fan favorite reference. The question is to what extent the reference will be connected to the main cabbage merchant.
In The Legend of Korra, Cabbage Corp was owned by Lau Gan-Lan, who took over the business from his father, the original Cabbage merchant. There is no indication in the series that Lau Gan-Lan has any offspring, but it seems that he wants to hand over his cabbage empire to someone. In Avatar: Seven Havens it's clear by now that something terrible has happened to destroy the world we knew at the end of Korra's time as Avatar, something that likely ended Cabbage Corp. But that doesn't mean the family business hasn't continued.
There are still 10 episodes left in the season, so there's plenty of time to set up a cabbage patch before the finale. This harmless cauliflower base may not be the strongest indicator that we'll get that reference, but it's enough for me to believe it will happen.
Will you be getting a Paramount+ subscription to watch Avatar: Seven? Asylum?
