There's something very wrong about Tom Cruise's attack in the Tom Cruise scene against Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan, but it's very right

I haven't seen Cruise connect with anyone on screen this way since Edge of Tomorrow

Anime Attack on Titan Chainsaw Man Digger MAPPA Warner Bros

What a boy Tom Cruise, huh? I don't necessarily mean that in a complementary sense, but more in a way that one might react upon glimpsing a cipher or some sort of folklore entity.

I, like many others, struggle to dislike the man. Every time Cruise does something interesting, like talk bad AI or passionately berate people for not following COVID guidelines on set, I have to remind myself that this is the same guy who went on that weird anti-psychiatry tangent in 2005 and, well, you know — there's the whole Scientology thing.

And once again, I feel like I have to resist the efforts of his very talented PR team, because I've probably seen this video of Cruise's visit to the 15th Anniversary MAPPA Show of Kaizen and Chainsaw Man Jujutsu Animators probably four times.

If you need some context—and trust me, everyone who's paid attention has at some point—Cruise and director Alejandro J. Iñárritu attended the expo as part of the Digger press tour.

I'm not sure how this visit relates to the other one, since I, like everyone else on planet Earth (except for Kotaku's Ethan Gach), have not seen the movie. Whatever the PR justification is, it clearly worked, because here I am talking about it.

It's an odd hour, akin to watching a Victorian child's TikTok review of a bag of Flamin' Hot Doritos, which might explain why the internet responded so willingly to the MAPPA Cruise tour drip clips.

It also doesn't hurt that Cruise's crush on MAPPA's talented animators is genuine and very likable. The tour ends with Cruise begging MAPPA character designer Tadashi Hiramatsu to let him come back and watch the team work in person. And hey, maybe it's because the guy is a fantastic actor, but I really believe he means it.

What's more, as far as other box office grosses go, the $200 million loss was totally worth it, because that incredible shot of Tom Cruise staring down Titan Eren Yeager's final form is priceless. It's weird that there seems to be a lot of chemistry between these two, because I always thought Cruise's dream wife was Makima the Chainsaw Man.
