With 816 horsepower, the Peugeot E-T16 concept offers a new definition of electric hatchbacks and envisions an exciting future for sports cars.

Peugeot unveiled the E-T16 concept to mark the 40th anniversary of the legendary Peugeot 205 T16's brilliant victories in the World Rally Championship. This concept car not only pays homage to the brand's proud past, but also showcases Peugeot's new design language. The E-T16 was introduced with the aim of creating a new "hyperhatch" segment and has the potential to redefine ultra-powerful electric hatchbacks.

Concept E-T16 technical specifications: Unparalleled power and performance

The Peugeot E-T16 is a road car, not a multi-level rally car, but it is equipped with features such as four-wheel drive and vertical hydraulic handbrake. The body color is Winchester Matte Gray, a tribute to the 205 T16 model, and the rear part of the body opens completely to reveal the mechanical components underneath. Instead of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, this Peugeot E-T16 concept uses two electric motors in the rear and one electric motor in the front.

These three engines produce a total of 816 horsepower and it is said that the Peugeot E-T16 concept can reach a speed of 300 km/h in 16 seconds. The 85 kWh lithium-nickel-manganese battery pack with 800-volt architecture provides the necessary power. Thermal management of the batteries is done through lateral cooling, which is derived from Peugeot's experience in motorsport. According to Peugeot, the concept can complete three laps of the Nordschleife Nurburgring in Performance Mode, which is impressive for a high-performance electric car.

"Feline Future" design language and futuristic cabin

Peugeot calls this new design style "Feline Future Design", which is set to be fully unveiled for the first time in the Peugeot E-208 production car. The most significant design change is a new horizontal interpretation of Peugeot's three-pronged light signature. The concept emphasizes its performance side with prominent wheel arches, an aggressively designed hood, a front bumper with three large air intakes, air extractors behind the front wheels and a rear underbody extractor including a twin diffuser and two adjustable aerodynamic blades to generate more downforce. A large 'cat-ear' rear fin also completes its aerodynamic look.

Inside the cabin, we see Peugeot's next-generation fully digital i-Cockpit, which integrates the Hypersquare system. This square-shaped steering wheel controller replaces the traditional steering wheel and uses advanced Steer-by-Wire technology that changes the steering ratio so the driver never needs to turn it all the way. The interior is made of carbon fiber, anodized aluminum, technical mesh and bucket seats with carbon fiber shell.

The importance of the E-T16 concept in the future of hot hatchbacks

With the arrival of all-electric vehicles, we're witnessing a future where the production of super-hot, high-performance hatchbacks is no longer limited to low-volume production. Cars like the mid-engined Renault Clio V6 or mid-engined Renault 5 Turbo 2 were limited due to complex production costs. But now, an all-electric chassis can be inherently reconfigurable, and motors can be added and controlled by software.

It may be debatable whether all-electric hyperhatch models will be affordable in the future, but if they cost the same as entry-level supercars, it would be a major shift in car culture.
