Prime Video has ordered Rally, a drama set in the world of elite competitive tennis, from Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, We Were Liars), Universal Television, 360 Entertainment and Amazon Studios MGM. Tennis great Andre Agassi will executive produce.
Written, produced and executive produced by Plec, the series is inspired by Entertainment 360's Guymon Cassidy's experience in the world of elite tennis academy culture.
In Raleigh, at a hyper-competitive elite tennis academy, ambitious young players discover that the loneliest sport in the world requires sacrificing the very connections that may be the only thing that makes winning worthwhile. "Rally's inspiration came from a deeply personal place - watching my kids practice and lead the intense pressure, dedication and brokenness of elite youth tennis at IMG Academy," said Casady. Building this world alongside master storytellers like Julie Plec, and grounding it in the unique and authentic landscape of a true legend like Andre Agassi, is a considerable bonus. Raleigh originally launched at Universal Television, a division of Universal Studios Group, a year ago under Plec's overall contract there. The series is produced by Plec and Emily Cummins for Plec's My So, a partnership under Plec's overall deal at Universal Television, alongside Entertainment 360's Casady, Agassi and Justin Gimelstob.
This is Plec's second series on Prime Video. He also has We Were Liars returning for a second season.
"Julie Plec is a master storyteller with an uncanny ability to create worlds that audiences fall in love with and characters they can't let go of," said Peter Friedlander, president of global television, MGM Amazon Studios. With an unmatched team including Andre, Guymon, Justin and Emily, Raleigh takes viewers into the pressure cooker of premium tennis, where every point of the match carries the weight of dreams and relationships. We couldn't be more excited to bring this series to Prime Video audiences around the world."
It's the first production gig for eight-time Grand Slam singles champion Agassi, who works alongside former tennis colleague and business partner Gimelstob, who hosts Apple TV's Open Agassi documentary.
"I look forward to Justin and I applying our experiences to help this incredible rally team," said Agassi. "At this stage in our lives, an endeavor that allows us to work with the best in class at what they do and hopefully contribute to the process is an exciting challenge. We are all aligned in creating a fun and, most importantly, authentic look at a beautiful and complex sport."
