Dark Link Switch 2 trailer The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time

This week we got some new information about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake thanks to the last round of previews and trailers before the game's November 5th Switch 2 release date. But our first look at how the new game handles one of the original's most interesting moments was actually revealed in a short teaser on Nintendo Japan's website. It features Dark Link, and I'm excited to go toe-to-toe with the Hero of Time's arch-enemy using remastered combat.

It's only a second, but the new teaser shows a series of frames where Dark Link jumps on Link's sword during the Water Temple mini-boss fight.

Dark Link, not to be confused with Shadow Link, is one of the most memorable parts of a great Zelda game. It's in the back half of one of the game's more confusing dungeons, and it's carefully executed to create a moment that feels cinematic but is completely interactive. Players run through a mysterious, foggy room full of shallow pits with a tree in the center.

They reach the other side to see a shadow standing in front of a tree in a locked door behind metal bars when the player turns again. Get closer to it and you can see that it is a mirrored version of Link. He immediately attacks without preamble, and if it's 1998 and you haven't practiced your swordsmanship skills in the game, he can be a bit difficult to maneuver. Wild swings abound and he even jumps on your sword. Or you can just use Deku Nuts to freeze your ass.

You can see that Dark Link has more distinctive features this time around in the Switch 2 remake, including a full crested Hylian shield. While we don't have a full look at the mini-boss's transformation, I'm guessing it will match Dark Link's outfits that have appeared in recent Smash Bros games. I'll be curious if this scene can still hold some of the magic of the N64 version after all these years. The second approach was subtle and based on subverting expectations in the game. Reconstruction may require a different approach.

But one part of the encounter that I'm pretty sure the Switch 2 version will deliver on is the combat. Given the simplified movement and aiming methods in the remake, I'm hoping this fight is even closer to some of the tense, 2D mirror duels with Iron Knuckles from Zelda 2.
